Why Cover Up? The Case for Protest Anonymity

Why Cover Up? The Case for Protest Anonymity

The case for covering your face protests, made as part of a new campaign by Netpol: The Network for Police Monitoring.

The campaign launched by Netpol last week,
which is seeking to challenge attitudes towards greater protection of
protesters’ privacy, has sparked considerable feedback about the ethics
of wearing a face covering or mask.

Some have argued an established position that
protest is fundamentally about making a public stand in support of
individual beliefs. Wearing a face covering therefore removes, not least
in the eyes of the courts, a level of personal accountability for how
you act in support of those beliefs.

Others, notably some anarchists, have insisted the option to ‘mask
up’ is hardly new and there is little evidence to suggest a wider group
of protesters, who have repeatedly resisted ‘black bloc’ solidarity
tactics and are unwilling to actively frustrate oppressive policing,
will suddenly embrace it.

There are merits in both of these positions, but both assume that
face coverings are intrinsically linked to public disorder – either as a
protection against police violence or, conversely, somehow emblematic
of the use of violence by protesters. We think, however, that the growth
of police surveillance has made the need for greater anonymity a much
bigger issue, for everyone who takes part in any protest.

Free Financial Markets Are A Hoax - Paul Craig Roberts

There are no free financial markets in America, or for that matter anywhere in the Western word, and few, if any, free markets of any other kind. The financial markets are rigged by the big banks, the Federal Reserve, and the Treasury in the interests of the profits of the few big banks and the dollar’s exchange value, which is the basis of US power.

There is a contradiction between a strong currency on one hand and on the other hand massive money creation in order to sustain zero and negative interest rates on the massive debt levels. This inconsistency is revealed by rising gold and silver prices.

When gold hit $1,900 an ounce in 2011 the Federal Reserve realized that the precious metal market was going to limit its ability to provide enough liquidity to keep the thoughtlessly deregulated financial system afloat. The rapid deterioration of the dollar in terms of gold and silver would sooner or later spill over into the exchange value of the dollar in currency markets. Something had to be done to drive down and to cap the gold price.

Game Over: Ukraine on Brink of Economic Collapse

Talking about the future of the Ukrainian economy Hudson said that it really comes down to money and the debt that Ukraine does not want to pay.
Michael Hudson, President of the Institute for the Study of Long-Term Economic Trends, spoke to Sputnik regarding the Ukrainian economy and its grim future.

“The businessmen are trying to take their money and run. They are trying to move it to Europe or putting it to their solvent businesses. They realize the game is over. This situation is going to leave Ukrainian businesses as an empty shell.”

Hudson compared the situation to that in Chile under general Pinochet. The USA sent him people that carried out operation Condor in Latin America.

“The US advisers have said the way to put down demonstration is to simply kill the leaders. You do what we taught the Chileans to do. You kill the labor leaders, the economists and you kill the professors and the journalists. Once you kill them with targeted assassination you don’t have a protest anymore, so the army has the guns, but the Ukrainian people don’t.”

“These things, designed by these people call these things after birds. It was operation ‘Phoenix’ in Vietnam, operation ‘Condor’ in Latin America, so for Ukraine I think it is operation ‘Vulture’.”

Talking about the future of the Ukrainian economy Hudson said that it really comes down to money.

“The US usually tries to solve all the problems just by bribery. There is a huge money pay off operation going on above these agreements.”

Richard Stallman, the famous creator of GNU operating system, which is often called Linux, opined in a post in The Guardian that almost every operating system in use today can be qualified as malware.

The list goes on with today’s popular mobile platforms as well as desktop operating systems.

Stallman emphasizes that any software program that is not distributed free of cost falls into malware category, he called today’s software “computing for suckers”, as OS software is designed to spy on users, chain them via DRM and has backdoors for mischievous agendas.

On Wednesday, WikiLeaks added more than half a million U.S. diplomatic
cables from 1978 to its Public Library of US Diplomacy database. The
documents include diplomatic cables and other diplomatic communications
from and to U.S. embassies and missions in nearly every country. "1978
actually set in progress many of the geopolitical elements that are
playing out today," Assange said. "1978 was the beginning of the Iranian
revolution … the Sandinista movement started in its popular form … the
war period in Afghanistan began in 1978 and hasn’t stopped since."

Dispatches: The Ugly Truth Behind British Tourists’ Ruined Holidays in Greece

First thing this morning, I read an article in the Daily Mail about British tourists on the Greek island Kos who complained about asylum seekers ruining their holidays and turning the island into a “disgusting hellhole.”

I have just returned from Kos, where I met with asylum seekers who crossed by boat from Turkey to Greece. Let me tell you something about hellholes.

I spoke with men, women, and children fleeing war in Syria and pervasive violence and persecution in Afghanistan. Nour, a young Palestinian from Syria, fled for fear of the extremist group Islamic State (also known as ISIS). “They kill people, cut heads, harm us psychologically. Once, I was walking at night and I stepped on something, grabbed it to see what it was, and felt some kind of hair. It was a head. That’s why we left.” Mubarek left northern Afghanistan with his wife and three young sons because of the threat of the Taliban: “Every day the Taliban take people and children for suicide bombings. I was worried about my sons.”

I also heard about the grim conditions on Kos. There is no reception facility, so police take migrants and asylum seekers to an abandoned hotel with makeshift beds, limited running water, and no electricity. Others sleep in tents provided by Doctors without Borders, while still others are left on the streets.

The Nonviolent Palestinian Activists Working for Peace in the West Bank

It was pitch-black in the graveyard. I was struggling to keep up with my guide, a 15-year-old boy named Ahmed who had jumped into my car ten minutes earlier and proceeded to guide me to the secluded spot. He made his way easily between the olive trees along a ridge in the choppy terrain, his thin body navigating the uneven ground. Over the lip of the hill on which the graveyard sat, the lights of Hebron flickered in the valley below.

My silent guide was taking me to meet Issa Amro, his longtime mentor and the founder of Youth Against Settlements, a nonviolent movement in the heart of the West Bank city of Hebron.

Afghan Insurgency Spreading North

Afghanistan comes to the fore of Central Asian agenda. The situation has greatly exacerbated in the northern Afghan provinces. General John F. Campbell, the commander of the Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces - Afghanistan and the last commander of the International Security Assistance Force, spoke during a press conference in Kabul, Afghanistan, Saturday, May 23, 2015. According to him, the Islamic State group is actively recruiting in the country but is not yet operational there. General Campbell said the group’s sophisticated social media campaign was attracting Taliban fighters based in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As a result, many were pledging allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group. «We don’t want it to continue to grow», he said, adding that efforts were being made to ensure its presence did not reach levels similar to Syria and Iraq. «In fact, Taliban and Daesh are reportedly fighting each other», the General said, using an acronym for the Islamic State group. «It is absolutely a concern».

Inside the latest attacks on Gaza | The Fifth Column

Inside the latest attacks on Gaza | The Fifth Column:

Gaza, Occupied Territories (TFC) – After weeks of provocation, one of the Palestinian resistance groups launched a solitary rocket into Israeli territory. The attack injured no one. Israel responded by launching a series of attacks from American-made F-16 fighters on military and civilian targets in Gaza. The Israeli Defense Force has stated that it will hold Hamas responsible for the attacks, even though their intelligence, Israeli news, and our reports say that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad was behind the attack. The collective punishment is a clear violation of international law.

Yesterday began with the news that yet another Palestinian child had been struck by an Israeli settler’s car during a hit and run incident. It was the third such “accident” in less than a month. That was followed by news that a Palestinian in the West Bank was beaten and shot by a group of men suspected of being Israel settlers. Tensions are already elevated because of the orders to construct new Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory and the continuing news of a hunger striker who is now in his 24th day of a diet of only salt and water. Then the news came out that the United States will be increasing its subsidy of the Israel military by $300 million, which will further arm the military that has only used its weapons against Palestinians in recent memory.

Ben Gurion ’48 letter barred return to Haifa | Jonathan Cook's Blog

Ben Gurion’s 1948 Letter: The Ethnic Cleansing Policy and Palestinians “Right of Return”
Written on 2 June 1948, the letter was sent to Abba Khoushy, soon to become Haifa’s mayor.

Over many decades, Israel’s self-serving deceptions about the Nakba in 1948 have been exposed for the lies Palestinians already knew them to be.

It was long accepted in the west that, as Israel claimed, Palestinians left their homes because they had been ordered to do so by neighbouring Arab leaders. The lie usefully distracted diplomats and scholars from the much more pertinent question of why Israel had refused to allow 750,000 Palestinian refugees to return to their homes after the war finished, as international law demanded.

The myth about the Arab leaders’ order, which had been steadily undermined by the work of the “new historians” of the late 1980s, was decisively punctured two years ago by an Israeli scholar who was given the wrong file by Israeli army archivists. It showed the story of the Arab leaders’ order was concocted by Israeli officials.

To beat ISIS, kick out US-led coalition — RT Op-Edge

To beat ISIS, kick out US-led coalition

It’s been a bad time for foes of ISIS. Islamic State scored a neat hat-trick by invading strategic Ramadi in Iraq’s mainly Sunni Anbar province, occupying Syria’s historic gem Palmyra, and taking over Al-Tanf, the last remaining border crossing with Iraq.

The multinational, American-led ‘Coalition’ launched last August to thwart Islamic State’s (IS, formerly ISIS) march across Syria and Iraq…did nothing.

And so Baghdad and Washington are pointing fingers, each accusing the other of being asleep on the job.

US Defense Secretary Ash Carter struck a low blow on Sunday in a CNN interview: “What apparently happened was that the Iraqi forces just showed no will to fight. They vastly outnumbered the opposing force. That says to me… that we have an issue with the will of the Iraqis to fight and defend themselves.”

Fabricating an Enemy. “The Threat of Al Qaeda” as a Justification to Wage War

This article was first published in January 2003, two months prior to
the launching of the war on Iraq. It was subsequently included in my
book entitled America’s “War on Terrorism”, Global Research, Montreal,
2005.

Since the publication of this article, the instruments of
propaganda have gained in impetus and sophistication. The global
campaign against Muslims has continued unabated with a view to creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

Suspected terrorists are arrested on trumped up charges. These arrests
of individuals of Middle Eastern origin are not motivated by security
considerations. Their main function is to provide legitimacy to the
“Global War on Terrorism” and the Homeland Security State.

The ultimate objective is to justify a war of conquest.

Terrorist attacks by Muslims against the Homeland are said to be
imminent. Counter-terrorism is intended to protect the Western World.

Much of the justification for waging this war without borders rests on
the legitimacy of the US administration’s anti-terrorist agenda. The
latter forms part of the propaganda campaign, which in turn is used to
sway the US population into an unconditional acceptance of the war
agenda.

What is the Mainstream Media NOT Reporting? | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization:

In George Orwell’s oft-quoted and insightful book 1984, we clearly see how this work of fiction has become reality, and in turn how reality is turned back into fiction through the manipulative, inaccurate and deceptive reporting of mainstream media. As Orwell accurately wrote:

“Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary.”

Indeed, this is the “reality” we face when we turn to mainstream news networks, a reality coloured and created through corporate interests which reflect their own agendas instead of the truth.

Israel breaches truce, hits blockaded Gaza with spates of air strikes

GAZA, (PIC)-- The Israeli occupation warplanes launched a series of air raids on the blockaded Gaza Strip early Wednesday morning in another flagrant violation of the Cairo-brokered ceasefire deal.

Local sources said F16 fighter jets had intensively hovered over the coastal enclave and hit an agricultural land near Gaza International Airport with at least one rocket.

Around four airstrikes were carried out on two resistance sites in southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah.

Three air strikes targeted empty resistance sites west of Khan Younis city, resulting in material damage. No injuries have been reported.

The Israeli warplanes also launched three air strikes on another empty resistance site in Beit Lahia, north of the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The Israeli warplanes continue meanwhile to hover intensively over the besieged coastal enclave.

The strikes come a few hours after the Israeli occupation threatened to act in retaliation for a rocket allegedly fired into Israel from Gaza.

Spokesperson for Interior Ministry Iyad al-Bozm said the ministry has kept tabs on the field situation and that measures have been taken in anticipation of Israeli military escalation.

FIFA Should Give Israel the Red Card

BUREIJ, Gaza Strip — On Friday, the annual congress of FIFA, the governing body of world soccer, is scheduled to vote on a proposal to suspend Israel from the organization. The Palestine Football Association called for this measure because Israel prevents our national team from participating in normal training, travel and competition. If the corruption scandal now enveloping FIFA derails the vote, we will continue to press the issue.

Players, coaches and referees are blocked from moving between the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and frequently are barred from tournaments. Israel has also violated FIFA rules by allowing teams from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank to play in Israel’s leagues. In addition, the Israeli fans of the Beitar Jerusalem club are notorious for chanting “Death to the Arabs” at matches — racist abuse that the Israel Football Association’s token disciplinary measures have failed to deter.

Even If The Patriot Act Expires, Government Will Keep Spying On All Americans

Mass surveillance under the Patriot Act is so awful that even its author says that
the NSA has gone far beyond what the Act intended (and that the
intelligence chiefs who said Americans aren’t being spied on should be prosecuted for perjury).

Specifically, the government is using a “secret interpretation” of the Patriot Act which allows the government to commit mass surveillance on every American.

So it’s a good thing that the Patriot Act may expire, but don’t get too excited …

Wikileaks’ Julian Assange said today:

Our sources say that the NSA is not too concerned, that
it has secret interpretations of other authorities that give it much the
same power that it would have had under the secret interpretation of
215 and other areas of the USA PATRIOT Act.

ZDNet agrees … and notes that Congress doesn’t even know about many of the government’s spying programs. And see this.

Illegal Construction on Stolen Palestinian Land: Netanyahu’s Settlement Bloc Boundaries Proposal | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization

Reports
indicate Netanyahu proposed establishing boundaries on settlement blocs
– on the one hand to justify continuing illegal construction on stolen
Palestinian land. On the other, for Israel to annex under any peace
agreement. Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said the proposal was
always Netanyahu’s position – so “nobody should be surprised.”

“(E)veryone in the Likud knows if there will ever be a partner for
peace, it is clear there will be territorial concessions” – code
language for grand theft with Palestinians having no say whatever over
what’s rightfully theirs.
Israel already controls over 60% of West
Bank land and much of East Jerusalem. Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel
called Netanyahu’s proposal “dangerous and precedential.”

MEPs accused of ‘betraying the European people’ in TTIP vote

The voice of the European people was ignored today when members of the European Parliament’s trade committee agreed a resolution backing the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) for the full parliament to vote on next month.

The vote flies in the face of European public opinion, with almost two million people signing a European Citizens’ Initiative opposing the secretive EU-US trade deal.

The full European Parliament will now vote on the compromise text at its next plenary in Strasbourg during the week of 8 June.

War on Want Executive Director John Hilary said: “Millions of people across Europe have said no to TTIP, in the strongest trade campaign we have ever seen. Yet MEPs have turned their backs on their own constituents, choosing instead to side with the business lobbyists of Brussels. This is an outright betrayal of the European people, and we shall not forget it.”

MEPs also backed the European Commission's controversial proposal for an ‘investor-state dispute settlement’ (ISDS) system, which grants privileged powers to foreign corporations.

EU Parliament trade committee fails citizens and environment

The European Parliament committee for international trade failed European citizens and the environment in a crucial vote on a proposed resolution on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, Friends of the Earth Europe has claimed. The draft resolution – which is to be debated in plenary on 10 June – is the unique opportunity for the European Parliament to give its opinion on the on-going trade talks between the EU and the US.

Friends of the Earth Europe condemned the outcome of the vote as a weak resolution failing to draw clear red lines on some of the biggest dangers of the proposed trade deal. There has been growing public outcry at the ongoing negotiations.

Natacha Cingotti, trade campaigner at Friends of the Earth Europe said: "The European Parliament trade committee turned its back on European citizens today, by failing to take a clear stance against the on-going transatlantic trade negotiations. Strong public concerns on key aspects of the talks, such as the planned inclusion of an investor-state dispute settlement mechanism, or attacks on legislators' ability to regulate in the public interest through regulatory cooperation, have only been partially acknowledged."

The TTIP negotiations have been described as a Trojan horse for powerful corporate interests, which are already using the talks to weaken and delay upcoming European legislation in the public interest. In particular, the planned inclusion of provisions such as investor-state dispute settlement or permanent regulatory cooperation would greatly empower industry lobby groups, while dangerously limiting the ability of legislators to regulate in key areas of citizens' everyday life – from the banning of toxic chemicals to financial regulation, or measures to prevent climate change.

Gentrification of US Cities and the Death of Black Communities | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization

Gentrification of US Cities and the Death of Black Communities | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization:

Gentrification – the displacement of Black and brown urban residents by more affluent whites – is a function of the same forces that emptied the cities of much of their white populations, generations ago: the movement of capital. Capital wants the cities back, and clears spaces for whites. “The system is stacked in favor of moneyed interests and white people.”

There is no city in this country where black people are safe from the current method of displacement known as gentrification. Washington, DC, once had a majority black population and was known as Chocolate City. Perhaps it is now the Café au Lait city as the black population has fallen below 50%. That dynamic gathers steam in New York and other cities and continues to push people out of their homes, deprive them of needed services and erode their quality of life.

The situation in New York City is illustrative of this phenomenon. According to census data the city’s black population dropped by 5% between 2000 and 2010. Brooklyn alone lost 50,000 black residents during that time while the white population grew by 37,000 people. The impact of money is the explanation for this reversal of fortune. The same sources of capital that took money out of the cities in decades past are now changing course. These market manipulations determine where black people can and cannot live and create a cascade of negative impacts.

The stories of torture and other ill-treatment of prisoners held by both sides in connection with the conflict in eastern Ukraine are not only shocking, they are all too common. Amnesty International interviewed 33 former prisoners for this briefing paper, 17 of whom had been held by separatists, and 16 by pro-Kyiv military and police forces, including the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). All but one of them described severe beatings or other serious abuse, particularly during the initial days of captivity.

At an 18th-century mansion in England’s countryside
last week, current and former spy chiefs from seven countries faced off
with representatives from tech giants Apple and Google to discuss

The three-day conference, which took place behind

France, Germany and Sweden were also in attendance. Google, Apple, and

According to an event program obtained by The Intercept,
questions on the agenda included: “Are we being misled by the term

A song of Oil, Ice and Fire - Shell's Plans to Drill The Arctic

A song of Oil, Ice and Fire - Shell's Plans to Drill The Arctic

A song of Oil, Ice and Fire - Shell's Plans to Drill The Arctic

Right now, Shell is preparing to drill in the Arctic for the first time. If we don’t stop them, it could be the beginning of the end for everything we hold dear - because if we’re willing to let them risk the destruction of this beautiful, vital, pristine landscape at the top of our world, what won’t we let them do?

To highlight this imminent threat to our way of life, we’ve teamed up with award-winning agency Don’t Panic and artists KennardPhillipps. Fire consumes three classic American landscapes, leaving in their place a dystopian vision of the future, a combination of the original paintings and imagery from real-life oil spills and disasters.

The famous artworks torched by Shell include ‘Christina’s World’ by Andrew Wyeth, ‘Pearblossom Highway’ by David Hockney and ‘An Arctic Summer: Boring Through the Pack in Melville Bay’ by William Bradford.

The collaboration between KennardPhillipps, Don’t Panic and Greenpeace working with classical artworks has several nice precedents. In 2013 Greenpeace attempted to install a large painting of Shell’s drilling rig, the Kulluk, run aground in the Arctic at the National Gallery during a Shell corporate event. The previous year, Don’t Panic’s television show ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised’ managed to install a print of Peter Kennard’s famous artwork ‘Haywain With Cruise Missile’ into the same National Gallery around the time of a corporate event held for Italian arms manufacturer Finmeccanica.

We won't stand aside while Shell risks everything we hold dear. It's time for ordinary people around the world to join together to protect the Arctic from Shell.

Sometimes it seems like we live in nonsensical times. Do you ever
wonder what happened to good old common sense? Indigenous voices from
around the world who are fighting for cultural survival and protection
of nature in their homelands offer simple wisdom in the face of climate
change, mining and other development projects. These voices are
highlighted in Standing On Sacred Ground, a four-part film series airing on the PBS World Channel through May and June.

Exclusive: Russia masses heavy firepower on border with Ukraine - witness

Russia's army is massing troops and hundreds of pieces of weaponry including mobile rocket launchers, tanks and artillery at a makeshift base near the border with Ukraine, a Reuters reporter saw this week.

Many of the vehicles have number plates and identifying marks removed while many of the servicemen had taken insignia off their fatigues. As such, they match the appearance of some of the forces spotted in eastern Ukraine, which Kiev and its Western allies allege are covert Russian detachments.

The scene at the base on the Kuzminsky firing range, around 50 km (30 miles) from the border, offers some of the clearest evidence to date of what appeared to be a concerted Russian military build-up in the area.

Earlier this month, NATO military commander General Philip Breedlove said he believed the separatists were taking advantage of a ceasefire that came into force in February to re-arm and prepare for a new offensive. However, he gave no specifics.

A Palestinian child from occupied East Jerusalem has lost an eye after being shot in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet fired by an Israeli soldier.

Yahiya al-Amudi, 10, was struck by the bullet as he walked near an Israeli military checkpoint in Shuafat refugee
camp on Thursday last week. The boy was subsequently hospitalized “with
a fractured skull, jaw and left ear and had surgery to remove his left
eye,” Ma’an News Agency reports. Al-Amudi was described as being in a critical condition.

Rubber-coated steel bullets are among Israel’s so-called arsenal of “non-lethal weapons.” The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem has referred to them, however, as “less fatal” weapons.

Although Israel promotes rubber-coated and sponge-tipped bullets,
tear gas and stun grenades as “non-lethal,” they “are dangerous weapons
that can cause death, severe injury or damage to property if improperly
used,” a B’Tselem report notes.

Between 2005 and January 2013, at least ten Palestinians were killed by “less fatal” weapons, according to the group’s statistics.

Much like al-Amudi, Suliman al-Tardi, 20, also lost his eye after
Israeli forces shot him in the face with a sponge-tipped bullet last
month in the Issawiyeh neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

Why Would Bloomberg News Completely Disappear the February, 2014 Ukraine Coup? Washington's Blog

Why Would Bloomberg News Completely Disappear the February, 2014 Ukraine Coup? Washington's Blog

 Bloomberg says in
a post today that the “confrontation between Russia and the US” over
Ukraine was “provok[ed]” by Putin’s annexation of Crimea:

“…Putin annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea last March, provoking the biggest confrontation between Russia and the U.S. and Europe since the Cold War.”

That’s odd, though, because the reintegration of Crimea into Russia
(after a vote in favor – but remember democracy is what we say it is)
happened, as Bloomberg says and BBC confirms, in March, 2014, about five months after violent,
US-backed protests began in November 2013, and ended in the the elected
Ukrainian president, Victor Yanukovych, being driven out of the country
by, as BBC put it, “radical groups”, including neo-Nazis: see BBC’s “Neo-Nazi Threat in Ukraine“,
Feb. 28, 2014.  (“BBC Newsnight’s Gabriel Gatehouse investigates the
links between the new Ukrainian government and Neo-nazis.”  Later
articles covering the topic were published by, among many others, Glenn Greenwald, Robert Parry, and even, albeit 8 or 9 months too late to make a difference, NBC)

Kiev’s Repression of Anti-Fascism in Odessa » CounterPunch: Tells the Facts, Names the Names

 The Reality of the Repression
Kiev’s Repression of Anti-Fascism in Odessa

There is a common misconception in the West that there is only one war in Ukraine: a war between the anti-Kiev rebels of the East, and the US-backed government in Kiev. While this conflict, with all its attendant geopolitical and strategic implications has stolen the majority of the headlines, there is another war raging in the country – a war to crush all dissent and opposition to the fascist-oligarch consensus. For while in the West many so called analysts and leftists debate whether there is really fascism in Ukraine or whether it’s all just “Russian propaganda,” a brutal war of political repression is taking place.

The authorities and their fascist thug auxiliaries have carried out everything from physical intimidation, to politically motivated arrests, kidnappings, torture, and targeted assassinations. All of this has been done under the auspices of “national unity,” the convenient pretext that every oppressive regime from time immemorial has used to justify its actions. Were one to read the Western narrative on Ukraine, one could be forgiven for believing that the country’s discontent and outrage is restricted solely to the area collectively known as Donbass – the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics as they have declared themselves. Indeed, there is good reason for the media to portray such a distorted picture; it legitimizes the false claim that all Ukraine’s problems are due to Russian meddling and covert militarization.

Tell Congress Now: Israeli military detention is no way to treat a child

Abed was only 15 years old when he was awoken late one night by a
masked Israeli soldier standing over his bed pointing a rifle at him.
“Wake up Habibi (my darling),” the soldier said, shortly before he
blindfolded and handcuffed Abed tightly behind his back. This was the
start of an ordeal that this child and his family endured when he was
arrested in the middle of the night, taken to an undisclosed location,
harshly interrogated and imprisoned on the suspicion of stone throwing.
This grim scenario is played out in hundreds of homes each year across
the West Bank.

Abed’s story
is one of several told in “Detaining Dreams” a new film by Amr Kawji
that is premiering on Tuesday, June 2 at Busboys and Poets in Washington
DC.

John and Joyce Cassel, retired school consultant and high
school teacher, traveled to the West Bank this spring to gather
testimonies from children who have experienced the Israeli Military
Juvenile Detention system. The Cassels worked with the staff of Defense
for Children International Palestine to gather these testimonies. DCIP

children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

TISA: Yet Another Leaked Treaty You've Never Heard Of Makes Secret Rules for the Internet | Electronic Frontier Foundation

TISA: Yet Another Leaked Treaty You've Never Heard Of Makes Secret Rules for the Internet | Electronic Frontier Foundation

TISA: Yet Another Leaked Treaty You've Never Heard Of Makes Secret Rules for the Internet

A February 2015 draft of the secret Trade In Services Agreement (TISA) was leaked again last week, revealing a more extensive and more recent text than that of portions from an April 2014 leak that we covered last year. Together with the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), TISA completes a trifecta of trade agreements that the administration could sign under Fast Track without full congressional oversight.

Although it is the least well-known of those agreements, it is the
broadest in terms of membership. As far as we know, it presently
includes twenty countries plus Europe (but notably excluding the major
emerging world economies of the BRICS bloc), who, with disdainful levity, have adopted the mantle
“the Really Good Friends of Services”. Like its sister agreements, TISA
will enact global rules that impact the Internet, bypassing the
transparency and accountability of national parliaments. The only
difference is that its focus is on services, not goods.

In our previous analysis,
we focused our attention on two points from the leaked text. The first
was a provision that would prohibit democratically-elected parliaments
from enacting limits on the "free flow of information" to protect the
privacy of their citizens—limits that, we argued, should be debated
publicly, not behind closed doors. The second was text on net
neutrality, that would lock in a particular set of global rules on net
neutrality, including an open-ended exception for “reasonable network
management” that could become a loophole for exploitation. Those
provisions remain in the new leaked draft.

But the latest leak has revealed more. The agreement would also
prohibit countries from enacting free and open source software mandates.
Although “software used for critical infrastructure” is already carved
out from this prohibition (and so is software that is not “mass market
software”, whatever that means), there are other circumstances in which a
country might legitimately require suppliers to disclose their source
code.

Medical holocaust: Psych drugs have killed more than 5 million people over the last 10 years

(NaturalNews) If every single person currently taking psychotropic medications or antidepressants were to be pulled off these deadly drugs and given a new, safer regimen instead, society would be much better off. This is the larger inference of a new review published in The BMJ (British Medical Journal), which found that more than half a million people in the West die every year from psych meds, which authors found have "minimal" benefits and a multitude of harmful side effects.

Researchers from the Nordic Cochrane Centre, an independent drug safety analysis group based out of Denmark, looked at the data on antidepressant and dementia drugs and found that, in most cases, they could cease to be administered across the board without inflicting any harm on patients. The demonstrated benefits of these widely administered drugs are lacking, researchers found, and many patients are taking them needlessly.

The paper, entitled "Does long term use of psychiatric drugs cause more harm than good?" looked at a series of randomized trials on antidepressant and dementia drugs and found that, contrary to popular belief, virtually none of these studies took an honest look at the drugs' "side" effects. Likewise, patients who took placebo pills during clinical trials fared roughly the same as those who took the actual drugs, suggesting that psych meds don't even work in the first place.

Using a meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials in patients with dementia, researchers discovered that more patients die from taking FDA-approved antidepressants than do patients who take no drugs, or who use other unconventional treatment methods. Similarly, the all-cause mortality rate was found to be 3.6% higher among patients who take newly-approved antidepressants compared to patients who take no antidepressants.

"Their [the drugs'] benefits would need to be colossal to justify this, but they are minimal," wrote Peter C. Gotzsche, a Nordic Cochrane Centre professor, about the utter uselessness of psych meds.

Congo’s Resource Curse, US Backed Atrocities & Refugee Industrial Complex | MEDIA ROOTS – Reporting From Outside Party Lines

Congo’s Resource Curse, US Backed Atrocities & Refugee Industrial Complex

Earlier this year, a US drone strike killed two innocent hostages, one American and one Italian citizen near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The incident spurred outrage across the media, resulting in Obama having to apologize for the grave error.

If only one could expect the same apology for the thousands of drone victims across the Muslim World since the advent of the War on Terror, most of whose names were never so much as uttered by those who sealed their deaths.

In today’s globalized world almost everything is interconnected. When it comes to war, conflicts are often interlocked in disturbing ways. For example, every death by way of drone wouldn’t be possible without turning a blind eye to the ongoing genocide from resource wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or DRC.

While people rightly demand that “Black Lives Matter” in America, black lives have been forgotten in the Congo, where nearly six million people have died just in the last fifteen years.

Fed Gov Explains How to Avoid a Run on the Banks

Federal Reserve Governor Jeremy Stein recently spoke to economists at an American Economic Association (AEA) conference on the subject of the “shadow banking sector” (SBS) that has created to temperament for a run on the banks.

Stein said this SBS was integral to the crash in 2007 that has cost the US a stable economy.

The central banker said: “Shadow banking money is much more run prone than bank money.”

Stein explained: “A stable deposit franchise gives a bank the ability to ride out transitory valuation changes of the sort that might come from noise-trader shocks or fire sales, without being forced to liquidate assets at temporarily depressed prices.”

Indeed Stein asserted that “banks have government insurance for the deposits they hold and are relatively well capitalized compared to other financial institutions thanks to the regulation that comes along with that insurance. It’s other financial institutions, generally called shadow banks, that are much more prone to runs.”

Government handouts, deposit insurance and a reliance on digital transactions have developed the pathway we are on now.

Assange: UK Media Silent on Trident Leaks Due to Self-Censorship

The UK media’s silence on the recent revelations casting doubts on safety and security issues within the UK Trident submarine nuclear deterrent program proves the existence of self-censorship, Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, told the Democracy Now news program in an interview on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — William McNeilly, a 25-year-old engineer, claimed in his 18-page report, posted by WikiLeaks earlier this month, that Trident nuclear deterrent security procedures are inadequate and described the overall state of the Trident program as a "disaster waiting to happen."
