On Tyranny: Yale Historian Timothy Snyder on How the U.S. Can Avoid Sliding into Authoritarianism | Democracy Now!

"The point of using the historical examples is to remind ourselves that
democracies and republics usually fail. The expectation should be
failure rather than success," says Yale University
historian Timothy Snyder. "Our mistake at present is to imagine that
the institutions will automatically continue to protect us."

The leaked reports exposed 20,000 deaths, including thousands of
children, according to Assange. Many of them contain evidence of war
crimes. [Among the leaked material was
the “Collateral Murder” video, a gruesome view from the gun-barrel of a
U.S. helicopter gunship as it mowed down a group of Iraqi men, including
two Reuters journalists, as they walked on a Baghdad street – and then
killing a man who stopped to help the wounded and also wounding two
children in his van.]

Russia Calls House Bill Aimed at North Korea an “Act of War.” Will the Senate Block H.R. 1644? | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization

Why was Konstantin Kosachev, chair of the Russian Senate’s Foreign
Affairs Committee, so alarmed about a US law ostensibly aimed at North
Korea? After all, there had been no
blistering partisan debate preceding the vote. Instead, the bill was
handled under a “suspension of the rules” procedure usually applied to
noncontroversial legislation. And it passed with only one dissenting
vote (cast by Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky).

Trump Came, Saw, Traumatises Europe

As the United States President Donald Trump returned to Washington late
Saturday, the question that arises is whether the world has become a
better place through his week-long
journey overseas, which began in the Middle East and led to the NATO
headquarters in Brussels, with an audience with the Pope in the Vatican
thrown in, and wound up at the Sicilian coast for the G7 summit.

UN Criticism Over Britain's Anti-terror Strategy Two Days Before Manchester Bombing - TruePublica

UN Criticism Over Britain's Anti-terror Strategy Two Days Before Manchester Bombing - TruePublica

By Graham Vanbergen: Reuters reports that:
Britain has been undergoing a subtle but alarming shift towards
criminalising peaceful protest and free expression, said a U.N. report
on Monday that likened it to a “Big Brother” state of surveillance and
suspicion.

I’ve been saying this for a few years now. Now the United
Nations have confirmed the trajectory of Britain’s surveillance state.
They simply haven’t gone far enough though. They are being diplomatic,
of course.

The report was highly critical of Britain’s surveillance
state and especially of Theresa May, who in her capacity as Home
Secretary pushed through many pieces of legislation that makes up
today’s current rather confusing domestic spying puzzle. Unfortunately,
it also failed to fully point out that there simply is no privacy
whatsoever in Britain and that our online security has been fully
compromised by the actions of the government leaving everyone open to
hackers and cyber-criminals.

However, the report does make some valid points when it
comes to matters of national security. No reference to the Manchester
bombing was made as the report was dated two days before.
