" Vox's 10-minute film, titled “The Middle East’s Cold War, Explained,”
is a textbook example of how US government propaganda pervades
corporate media. With the help of a
former senior government official and CIA analyst, the Vox video
articulates a commonplace pro-US, anti-Iran narrative that portrays the
violent conflicts in the Middle East as sectarian proxy wars between
Iran and Saudi Arabia.

In
order to do so, the film grossly downplays US involvement in the region,
treating Saudi Arabia as though it acts independently of the US. It
also fails to ever mention Israel, totally removing one of the most
important players in the Middle East from its “Cold War” narrative. "

The west London council was
responsible for Grenfell Tower, in which more than 80 people died a
terrible death on June 14. Decades of deregulation (including the
trashing of building and fire regulations) and the use of combustible
cladding and insulation to cut costs turned the building—home to more
than 500 people—into a death trap.

Working class residents have accused the council of “social
cleansing.” Some have even suggested that so hostile is the council—the
wealthiest borough in London—to workers and the poor that they would not
be surprised if the fire was an attempt by the super-rich to drive
“undesirable” residents out of the area.

A New Economic Story: Real Prosperity Revolves Around the Sanctity of Life

The economy is much more than a series of transactions: It’s about

When we change the story of ourselves from consumers to full human

Sheikh Mustafa Tawil fears the latest Israeli security measures at the

it just like with Hebron’s Ibrahimi mosque in 1994. “Muslims aren’t

The occupiers want to do the same thing to Al Aqsa mosque,” Tawil said.
“We refuse these gates because they were set up by the occupiers to

over the mosque at all. The metal detectors are just the first step in
dividing Al Aqsa mosque.”

CATALONIA --- LET CATALANS VOTE

LET CATALANS VOTE

LET CATALANS VOTE

A majority of Catalans have repeatedly expressed in
different ways the wish to exercise their democratic right to vote on
their political future.

This strong demand to vote is the result of longstanding dissension between the governments of Catalonia and Spain
over the degree of cultural, political, and financial autonomy that
Catalans should enjoy, despite several attempts to reach an acceptable
solution.

As the precedents in Quebec and Scotland show, the best way to solve legitimate internal disputes is to employ the tools of democracy.

To prevent the Catalans from voting seems to contradict the principles that inspire democratic societies.

Accordingly, we call on the Spanish government and institutions and their Catalan counterparts to
work together to allow the citizens of Catalonia to vote on their
political future and then negotiate in good faith based on the result.

CATALONIA -- Spanish steps: On the secession vote in Catalonia - The Hindu

Spanish steps: On the secession vote in Catalonia - The Hindu

Madrid pulls out all the stops ahead of the secession vote in Catalonia

Ahead
of the controversial October 1 referendum on secession in Catalonia,
the Spanish government’s awkward move of tightening the purse-strings
could prove politically costly. There is cause for concern that Prime
Minister Mariano Rajoy's meddling with the financial priorities of
Barcelona will play into the hands of the separatists. A veteran of many
a crisis, Mr. Rajoy recently issued instructions to the regional
government to ensure that not a single euro earmarked for development
activities is diverted to the vote. The decision requiring weekly
certification follows a judicial declaration that all expenditure
towards the vote were unconstitutional. Recourse to such seemingly
stringent measures has predictably drawn flak from Catalan leaders, who
were already embittered that the province is being denied its due share
of the overall tax revenues. Madrid’s mainstream political parties are
opposed to the long-standing demand of Catalonia for independent
statehood. Riding on the overwhelming support in the national
parliament, Mr. Rajoy’s centre-right coalition is determined to block
the proposed independence referendum. The government is even
contemplating the invocation of Article 155 of the constitution to
exercise direct authority over the north-eastern region in the event of a
worst-case scenario. The country’s constitutional court is widely
expected to rule that any referendum, as well as secession from the
union, is violative of the constitution.

On Left Activism: Breaking Up Is Easy, but Sticking Together? That's the Real Test of One's Ideals

"There is good reason for people on the left to have divisiveness on
their minds. In the news and on social media, the leftists that are
shown most often are those that are
ranting and raging at each other, calling each other out over this
badly-phrased thought or that impulsive tweet, or exposing one another
as less liberal or tolerant than their comrades. We're also regularly
force fed images of 'activists' who are dressed identically in black,
attacking cops who themselves seem to be dressed for a round on Robot
Wars.

There’s a common
theme underlying both kinds of coverage: in it, we only ever see the
left wing in a state of conformism, a state of attack against whatever
doesn't fit neatly into its narrow parameters of 'ideal.’ At a
subconscious level, this preconditions us to view activism as a
rejection, rather than an affirmation of certain ideals. As a result,
fear, not hope, becomes the public's only motivation for living up to
the left's demands."

Grenfell Tower - The Unrestrained Privatisation Profit Model That Kills - TruePublica

TruePublica Editor: The article below is an excerpt by Liz Smith writing for wsws.org entitled: Residents in Bradford, England: “We are all affected by what has happened at Grenfell.
It highlights one particular aspect of the continuing situation that
surrounds not just Grenfell Tower but social housing generally in
Britain – that privatisation,
the market driven profit model is somehow the most effective way to
deliver services to the wider public. The consequence of the push by
both Labour and Conservative governments since Thatcher to fully
financialise social housing in Britain are that millions are on waiting
lists with many to eventually end up entering buildings like Grenfell
Tower. Buildings such as these are now known to litter the country. They
are death traps for the many on the one hand and cash generators for
the very few on the other.

Reporters also spoke to workers who lived in the high-rise flats
situated at the bottom of Manchester Road. Built in the late 1960s as
part of a massive expansion of social housing to replace slums, the
flats were initially coveted as the place to live. Following the oil
crisis in 1973 and the subsequent hike in electricity prices, workers
who lived there faced considerable debt. Many had no choice but to stop
using the under-floor heating systems installed, which then caused
widespread damp.

Things have worsened ever since. In 2003, as part of the
privatisation moves of the Blair Labour government, all council-owned
housing was transferred to Incommunities, an arms-length social housing
company which owns and is responsible for tower blocks such as Douglas
and Evans Towers, 15-storeys high, and the Courts, which are all 12
storeys.

Donald Trump and the Coming Fall of American Empire

Donald Trump and the Coming Fall of American Empire

 TomDispatch

I'm
proud to say that Jeremy Scahill has featured historian Alfred McCoy
and upcoming Dispatch book, 'In the Shadows of the American Century" in
his latest popular podcast (and at the
Intercept). Do check out their interview and then pre-order a copy of
his must-read book (link below). Tom

"Even as President Donald Trump faces ever-intensifying investigations
into the alleged connections between his top aides and family members
and powerful Russian figures, he serves as commander in chief over a
U.S. military that is killing an astonishing and growing number of
civilians. Under Trump, the U.S. is re-escalating its war in
Afghanistan, expanding its operations in Iraq and Syria, conducting
covert raids in Somalia and Yemen, and openly facilitating the Saudi’s
genocidal military destruction of Yemen.

"Meanwhile, China has quietly and rapidly expanded its influence without deploying its military on foreign soil.

"A new book by the famed historian Alfred McCoy predicts that China is
set to surpass the influence of the U.S. globally, both militarily and
economically, by the year 2030. At that point, McCoy asserts the United
States Empire as we know it will be no more. He sees the Trump
presidency as one of the clearest byproducts of the erosion of U.S.
global dominance, but not its root cause. At the same time, he also
believes Trump may accelerate the empire’s decline.

"McCoy argues
that the 2003 invasion of Iraq was the beginning of the end. McCoy is
not some chicken little. He is a serious academic. And he has guts.

"During the Vietnam war, McCoy was ambushed by CIA-backed
paramilitaries as he investigated the swelling heroin trade. The CIA
tried to stop the publication of his now classic book, “The Politics of
Heroin.” His phone was tapped, he was audited by the IRS and he was
investigated and spied on by the FBI. McCoy also wrote one of the
earliest and most prescient books on the post 9-11 CIA torture program
and he is one of the world’s foremost experts on U.S. covert action. His
new book, which will be released in September, is called “In the
Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of U.S. Global
Power.”

“The American Century, proclaimed so triumphantly at the
start of World War II, may already be tattered and fading by 2025 and,
except for the finger pointing, could be over by 2030,” McCoy writes.
Imagining the real-life impact on the U.S. economy, McCoy offers a dark
prediction:

“For the majority of Americans, the 2020s will
likely be remembered as a demoralizing decade of rising prices, stagnant
wages, and fading international competitiveness. After years of
swelling deficits fed by incessant warfare in distant lands, in 2030 the
U.S. dollar eventually loses its special status as the world’s dominant
reserve currency.

Suddenly, there are punitive price
increases for American imports ranging from clothing to computers. And
the costs for all overseas activity surges as well, making travel for
both tourists and troops prohibitive. Unable to pay for swelling
deficits by selling now-devalued Treasury notes abroad, Washington is
finally forced to slash its bloated military budget. Under pressure at
home and abroad, its forces begin to pull back from hundreds of overseas
bases to a continental perimeter. Such a desperate move, however, comes
too late.

Faced with a fading superpower incapable of paying
its bills, China, India, Iran, Russia, and other powers provocatively
challenge U.S. dominion over the oceans, space, and cyberspace.”

Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade.” His new
book, out in September, is “In the Shadows of the American Century: The
Rise and Decline of US Global Power.”

"This week, I interviewed
McCoy for the Intercepted podcast. We broadcast an excerpt of the
interview on the podcast. Below is an edited and slightly condensed
version of the full interview. In this wide-ranging interview, we
discuss Trump and Russia, the history of CIA interference in elections
around the world, the Iran-Contra scandal, the CIA and the crack-cocaine
epidemic, U.S. proxy wars, narcotrafficking in Afghanistan, and much
more...."

Radical Municipalism: The Future We Deserve

Radical Municipalism: The Future We Deserve

" This fantastic guest editorial by Debbie Bookchin in the latest issue of ROAR Magazine lays a roadmap for bringing a new egalitarian society into being.

"A municipalist
politics is about much more than bringing a progressive agenda to city
hall, important as that may be. Municipalism — or communalism, as my
father [Murray Bookchin] called it — returns politics to its original
definition, as a moral calling based on rationality, community,
creativity, free association and freedom. It is a richly articulated
vision of a decentralized, assembly-based democracy in which people act
together to chart a rational future. At a time when human rights,
democracy and the public good are under attack by increasingly
nationalistic, authoritarian centralized state governments, municipalism
allows us to reclaim the public sphere for the exercise of authentic
citizenship and freedom. Municipalism demands that we return power to
ordinary citizens, that we reinvent what it means to do politics and
what it means to be a citizen. True politics is the opposite of
parliamentary politics." "
