The fact that Gina Haspel oversaw torture while a CIA officer is only
part of the problem, writes Phil Giraldi. A bigger problem is that no
one at the top in Washington is ever
accountable. He adds, "Haspel’s willing participation in running a black
site prison where torture was carried out was illegal then just as it
is illegal now, no matter what some slimy government lawyer whose job
depended on pleasing his boss the president might have said. Gina Haspel
could have turned the assignment down if she was bothered by what was
going, but ambition drove her to accept the position and all it entails,
making her current disavowing of torture a bit hard to accept."

Is Julian Assange About To Be Arrested? - TruePublica

By TruePublica: According
to numerous mainstream media reports, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange
is about to be forced to leave the Ecuadorian embassy in London. If that
happened, he would face imminent arrest by British authorities and
extradition to the US, where he would probably face life imprisonment on
the one hand or execution on espionage charges on the other. The latter
being the preferred option for the Trump administration.

It has now been exactly two months since Assange has been denied
visitors and any outside communications since the Ecuadorian government
cut off his access on March 28. He has no internet, phone, television
and is no longer allowed visitors at all.

The truth is, no-one actually knows if Assange is still actually on the Ecuadorian premises.

The U.S. and Israel Are Marching towards War with Iran | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization

DR. LUDWIG WATZAL: On Monday, May 21, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
delivered a rant against Iran before the right-wing Heritage Foundation
in Washington. It was a bullying speech to push the Iranian leadership
to surrender unconditionally to US demands. If the Iranian people are
unable to contrive “regime change” the US will do it by military means,
perhaps together with Israel, which Pompeo didn’t say. But everybody
knows that Israel is hell-bent to crush Iran.

(including Global Research) are accused of publishing “fake news”, the
routine publication of “fake news” by the corporate media is invariably
overlooked.

By MediaLens:
The gaping chasm between reality and unreality is exemplified by recent
contrasting statements about journalism from two veteran reporters. On
the one side we have Jeremy Bowen, the BBC’s Middle East editor, who
enjoys a public image of principled honesty and a supposedly fierce
commitment to news balance and impartiality. But, when he was challenged
recently on Twitter about the blatant bias in BBC News reporting, he responded just as one would expect of a well-rewarded, high-profile employee of the national broadcaster:

‘We are the best source of decent, impartial reportage anywhere in the world.’

What 30 Years of Documents Show Shell Knew About Climate Science - TruePublica

What 30 Years of Documents Show Shell Knew About Climate Science - TruePublica

BMike Small and Chloe FarandDeSmogUK: There can be no mistake: as early as 1981, big oil company Shell was aware of the causes and dangers of climate change.

These documents show Shell walking backwards. In the 1980s it was
acknowledging anthropogenic global warming. Then, as the scientific
consensus became more and more clear, it started introducing doubt and
giving weight to a “significant minority” of “alternative viewpoints” as
the full implications for the company’s business model became clear.

By trawling through a tranche of documents first uncovered by Jelmer Mommers of De Correspondent, published on Climate Files, DeSmog UK can chart 30 years of the company’s understanding of climate science.

Shell commissioned a study about the greenhouse effect in 1981 by the
Climate Research Unit and Dr T.G Wigley, which was published by the US Department
of Environment in 1984. Then in 1988 the confidential report “The
Greenhouse Effect” is prepared for the Shell Environmental Conservation
Committee. From other source documents we can then follow as senior
figures and publications veer between defence of climate science denial
positions, faith in technological solutions and “efficiency”, the belief
that countries should just adapt to a changing world, and  questioning
the validity of the scientific process.

The Letter To Britain's Ministry of Defence About ‘Thermobaric’ Weapons - TruePublica

Last week TruePublica reported
via DroneWarsUK that the UK’s Ministry of Defence was frequently using a
specific weapon in Syria that by any standard, is so horrific, it is
considered illegal. According to the International Committee of the Red
Cross, the International Criminal Court (ICC) – The “employment of a thermobaric weapon against a population is about half of a war crime.
And the only reason the use of thermobaric weapons isn’t a war crime is
in fact because the international community has yet to officially name
them as cruel weapons against the spirit of just about every single law
of war that exists.

We said: “The question of their use anywhere in the world by
British forces should be put to the government and it does not warrant
the usual muted response behind ‘national security.”

Propaganda 101: How To Defend A Massacre | Current Affairs

This
piece is a really superb deconstruction of mainstream propaganda
justifying last week's murder of large numbers of Palestinians in Gaza.
It's a kind of masterclass in critical thinking, which is why I
recommend it to you.

Two things to remember as you read it. The
article under analysis – the one rationalising a massacre – was
published in the New York Times. What does it say about the depraved
ethics of the paper and its elite readership that the editors thought
they could pass off this apologia for a massacre as informed commentary?

And equally troubling, exactly the same piece could have been written,
and published by the NYT, had it been justifying the murder not of 60
Palestinians, but 60,000, or maybe even 600,000. It opens your eyes to
how easily might the NYT become the vehicle for justifying to liberal
Americans a genocide in Gaza, or anywhere else.

Israel massacred
60 Palestinians on Monday, including seven children, bringing to 101
the total number of Palestinians Israel has killed since Palestinians
began the Great March on March 30. In that period, Israel has killed 11 Palestinian children, two journalists, one person on crutches and three persons with disabilities.

Monday’s casualties included 1,861 wounded, bringing total injuries
inflicted by Israel to 6,938 people, including 3,615 with live fire.
Israel is using bullets designed to expand inside the body, causing
maximum, often permanent damage:

“The injuries sustained by patients will leave most with serious, long-term physical disabilities,” says Médecins Sans Frontières (Ha’aretz4/22/18).

On the 70th anniversary of Israel’s so-called “declaration of
independence,” the United States opened its new embassy in Jerusalem—a
city Israel claims as its own, despite what international law says on the matter—and Palestinians undertook unarmed protests
in reaction to the move and as part of the Great Return March. Although
to this point, the only Israeli casualty during the entire cycle of
demonstrations has been one “lightly wounded” soldier, considerable space in coverage of the massacres is devoted to blaming Palestinians for their own slaughter.

By Joseph Fitsanakis – IntelNews: NATO obtained Soviet Novichok nerve agents through German intelligence in the 1990s.

Some North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states obtained
access to the Soviet Union’s so-called ‘Novichok’ nerve agents in the
1990s, through an informant recruited by German intelligence, according to reports.

NATO countries refer to ‘Novichok-class’ nerve agents to describe a
series of weaponized substances that were developed by the Soviet Union
and post-Soviet Russia from the early 1970s to at least 1993. They are
believed to be the deadliest nerve agents ever produced, but Moscow
denies their very existence.

Britain’s democratic farce: This is how the ‘hereditary by-election’ works - TruePublica

Britain’s democratic farce: This is how the ‘hereditary by-election’ works - TruePublica

By Dareen Hughes – Electoral Reform Society: Last week, there was a rather hushed announcement in
parliament: a resignation among the Lords. A peer has decided to
retire. No big news usually, but this is no ordinary peerage. Nor will
it be an ordinary replacement. In fact, it will represent the totally
unreformed, undemocratic nature of the second chamber.

The 4th Earl Baldwin of Bewdley is the grandson of Stanley Baldwin –
the three-time Conservative prime minister. He was awarded a hereditary
peerage in 1937 – meaning membership of the House of Lords for him and
his eldest son was to be automatic, forever. Well – until the Lords was
to be properly reformed.

Yet when Tony Blair’s ‘Stage One’ Lords reform was going through in
the late 1990s, threats by noble Lords to hold up the passage of all
legislation in the House led the Labour prime minister to negotiate a
deal with the Conservative leader in the House, Viscount Cranborne. This
was conducted in secret without the knowledge of then Conservative
leader William Hague and led to Cranborne’s sacking.
