political philosopher Leo Strauss might have called a “heroic delusion.”
It is a noble dream, a dream that the only thing necessary for peace in
Europe is shared prosperity. And for a time, the EU was living the
dream. The hardships of the 2008 financial crisis, however, showed what a
flimsy basis shared prosperity was for the EU’s future. Much of the
infighting we observe today within the EU is a last-ditch effort by some
to give the EU the types of powers it would need to forge an effective
and politically sovereign entity. They are unlikely to succeed.
Take the bureaucratic spat
between Poland and the European Commission. The two have long been at
odds over the current Polish government’s desire to reform Poland’s
judicial system in a way that gives it more power to select and remove
judges. The latest chapter in the saga began Aug. 28, when Poland’s
Foreign Ministry released a statement rejecting the commission’s
critiques of Poland as “groundless” and sent a 12-page document of legal
reasoning to Brussels to underscore the point. The European Commission
fired back Aug. 31, with the deputy head of the commission saying the
body would not drop the issue and would seek all means at its disposal
to bring Poland to heel. The same day, in an interview with Le Point,
French President Emmanuel Macron said Poland’s policies were “very
worrying,” saying they call into question European solidarity and even
the rule of law itself.
This kind of back-and-forth isn’t all that unusual for bureaucracies such as the EU’s,
but it ignores the inescapable dilemma: The Continent is populated not
by Europeans but by several vastly different nations. The inability or
unwillingness to understand as much was apparent in the rest of Macron’s
interview in Le Point. When asked how he would revive Europe, his first
answer was, “I believe in Europe.” To believe in Europe is to confess
that the existence of “Europe” as a political entity is based not on
fact or shared interest but on hope. Hope is a good thing, and there is a
time and a place for it. But hope is not what defines lasting political
realities.

Federal Criminal Police (BKA) are illegally storing masses of data
regarding supposed “politically motivated crimes.” As broadcaster ARD
reported, data on more than 100,000 people accused of such offences is
being held in a database called “Internal Security,” even though in the
vast majority of cases, there has never been a charge, let alone a court
proceeding. The ARD report suggests that the BKA is operating a
“blacklist” of journalists and political activists classified as
“left-wing extremists.”
Both the extent of the
surveillance and the arbitrary and unconstitutional storage of such data
are typical characteristics of an authoritarian police state. The BKA
is combining the records of the secret service and various police
bodies. Its enthusiasm for data hoarding goes beyond that of the Stasi
(State Security Police) of the former East Germany.

would repeal the rule on conflict minerals. The move would fit with
President Trump’s focus on cutting regulations for business.
A section of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection
Act passed under President Barack Obama in 2010 requires U.S. companies
to disclose whether any of the minerals used in their products come from
Democratic Republic of Congo.
Eastern Congo, the main
battleground in Africa’s deadliest war between 1998 and 2003, has huge
deposits of coltan, a metallic ore that is widely used in smartphones,
laptops and other electronic devices.
Up to 2 million slaves in
Congo engage in artisanal mining, the largest workforce in the world,
but the country’s natural wealth has not translated into development.
Congo was ranked 176 out of 188 countries in the 2016 U.N. Human
Development Index; millions of people remain displaced by past and
current conflicts; and the country suffers from a crippling lack of
infrastructure.
The mining of conflict minerals helped to finance
the Second Congo War, a bloody and complicated conflict that broke out
in 1998 and involved a large number of rebel groups—allegedly backed by
Rwanda and Uganda—trying to topple the government in Kinshasa, Congo’s
capital. As a result of the war and its aftermath, more than 5 million
people are thought to have died, and the conflict has been dubbed
Africa’s World War.
Conflict is currently wracking the Kasai
region in central Congo, after a tribal leader, Kamuina Nsapu, was
killed by security forces in 2016. Almost 1.3 million people have been
displaced by the conflict and at least 400 people have been killed. Two
U.N. experts, including an American, were killed after disappearing in
the region in March.
U.S. conflict minerals regulation meant that
“the activity of other armed groups in the mining sites had decreased
substantially as well as their capacity for violence.”

Controversial billionaire George Soros will spend more on the 2018 midterm elections than in any previous one.
In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission
that corporations, unions, and certain nonprofits should be allowed to
raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to advocate for and against
political candidates.
Since then, Soros has raised $5 million for Democratic politicians in midterm elections.
Specifically, Soros took advantage of this ruling by using his Open
Society Foundation (OSF) as a major contributor hub for the politicians
and legislative proposals he liked best.
And in the two midterm elections since Citizens United (in 2010 and 2014), that $5 million amounts to mere pocket change for the hedge fund aficionado.
He's worth a whopping $25.2 billion, after all.
But a small increase in campaign contributions would mean a giant
leap in political influence. In fact, the midterm elections could yield
massive changes in Congress next year – which is exactly what the
billionaire wants.

The far-reaching Brexit agreement
that will govern the UK’s exit from the European Union is not only
being shaped at the negotiating table, but also by the lobbyists who are
trying to influence each side’s position papers and red lines.
New analysis of official statistics on lobby meetings with
ministers from the UK’s Department for Exiting the EU (DExEU) and
members of the EU’s Brexit Task Force reveals a common willingness to
privilege the representatives of corporate interests above all others:
Between October 2016 and March 2017, DExEU staff had six meetings with big business representatives for every one meeting with an NGO, a trade union or a think tank.
This figure may even just be the tip of the iceberg, as Brexit lobby
meetings are also likely to take place with DExEU officials not required
to disclose meetings.
The team of Chief EU Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier had ten meetings with corporate lobbyists for every one NGO they met between October 2016 and May 2017.
The full list of meetings highlights just how rarely citizens and
smaller businesses have been heard by the negotiators, despite the fact
that the Brexit deal will directly affect the everyday lives of all UK
residents and the country’s many small and medium-sized businesses.
