On October 1, a referendum will be held on whether Catalonia, an
autonomous region of the northeast of Spain, should declare itself to be
an independent country. The Spanish government has ruled the
referendum illegal, and is taking action on a number of fronts to shut
it down and to censor communications promoting it. One of its latest
moves in this campaign was a Tuesday police raid of the offices of
puntCAT, the domain registry that operates
the .cat top-level domain, resulting in the seizure of computers, the
arrest of its head of IT for sedition, and the deletion of domains
promoting the October 1 referendum, such as refoct1.cat (that website is
now available at an alternate URL).

Former British ambassador Craig Murray has been writing a string of
posts on his blog about what is happening in Spain that makes for
disturbing reading.
He has been especially shocked at the
response of the EU Commission. He believes that, in publicly giving its
full backing to Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, the Commission
has effectively set the stage for more violence from the Spanish
government against the Catalan people and their representatives.
Certainly, it cannot be a good sign that Spain's highly politicised
Constitutional Court has shut down the Catalan parliament, overriding
the democratic will of the Catalan people.
Murray, as someone
who spent many years in the senior diplomatic service, has a much better
idea than most of us how to read the significance of what can sound to
an outside observer like bland formulations of protocol.
Murray:
It takes a very special kind of chutzpah systematically to assault
voters, and drag them from polling booths by their hair, and then say
that a low turnout invalidates the vote. That is the shameless position
being taken by the Europe-wide political Establishment and its corporate
media lackeys. ...
The rule of law is not everything. Apartheid
was legally enforced in South Africa. ... British colonialism was
enforced by laws. Nor is the administration of the law always impartial.
Apartheid had its judges. Pinochet had judges to enact his version of
the “rule of law”.
Actually all dictators are very big on “the rule of law”.
The most sinister thing [EU Commissioner Frans] Timmermans said to the
European Parliament was: “There can be no human rights without the rule
of law”. Sinister because he did not balance it with “There can be no
rule of law without human rights”.
What Spain is attempting now
to impose on Catalonia is rule of law without democracy. I am going to
be most interested to see how Brussels manages to justify that. We are
seeing a whipping up of hatred by a central government against a
national and linguistic minority and a suppression of its freedoms and
institutions.

"The
last fifteen laws we have passed in the Catalan parliament have been
banned by the Spanish state. But these are not independentist laws —
many of them are social laws: for
example, a law about sanctuary for those fleeing persecution, a law
banning energy companies from turning off people’s electricity, and a
law for a higher minimum wage. We want to use our autonomy to improve
people’s lives and we are forbidden. People see this and respond. They
want to decide the future of Catalonia and that is not possible in the
current arrangement.
But
specifically on this question of remittances, the CUP has said for a
number of years that an independent Catalonia should pay money to poorer
parts of Spain in the transition. It doesn’t have to be a short time,
it could be twenty or thirty years. We don’t want these regions to
suddenly lose money. We are internationalists and we are in solidarity
with workers and the poor in Spain."

The American empire is coming to an end. The U.S. economy is being
drained by wars in the Middle East and vast military expansion around
the globe. It is burdened by growing deficits, along with the
devastating effects of deindustrialization
and global trade agreements. Our democracy has been captured and
destroyed by corporations that steadily demand more tax cuts, more
deregulation and impunity from prosecution for massive acts of financial
fraud, all the while looting trillions from the U.S. treasury in the
form of bailouts. The nation has lost the power and respect needed to
induce allies in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa to do its
bidding. Add to this the mounting destruction caused by climate change
and you have a recipe for an emerging dystopia. Overseeing this descent
at the highest levels of the federal and state governments is a motley
collection of imbeciles, con artists, thieves, opportunists and
warmongering generals. And to be clear, I am speaking about Democrats,
too.

Fukushima Operator Given Green Light to Restart Nuclear Reactors
(ANTIMEDIA) — The Japanese utility Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has received approval to operate reactors for the first time since the 2011 Fukushima meltdown.

On Wednesday, the Nuclear Regulation Authority said TEPCO’s
two reactors in northern Japan met new and stricter safety standards.
The authority unanimously approved the draft certificate for reactors
number 6 and 7 at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, marking the first step
in the process toward restarting them. Portions of the plant’s reactors
were damaged in a 2007 earthquake.
Much of the Japanese public is opposed to granting TEPCO permission
to once again operate reactors, and rightfully so. TEPCO was blamed for
safety lapses in the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster after a major
earthquake in March of 2011, and the tsunami that followed damaged the
power supply and cooling system of three reactors at the Fukushima
Daiichi plant, resulting in an unprecedented nuclear accident.
The area around the plant will be closed for the foreseeable future, with extremely high levels of radiation still being recorded in 2017. Radiation from the damaged plant has found its way into the ocean and surrounding areas, including groundwater. The long-term effects of the disaster are still unknown.

misunderstandings.”

The daily's investigation reveals that the US biotechnology giant has published articles signed by scientists but co-written by its employees to refute the expertises denouncing the toxicity of glyphosate, active ingredient that is part of the composition of Roundup, this herbicide marketed globally by the firm.

There are currently 16,000 troops stationed just off the Catalan
coast. According to some media reports “SPAIN has sent convoys of troops
into Catalonia in a move that is likely to anger the regional
parliament.” Commanders deployed troops into Catalonia last night in a
move that will push the region to the brink over the referendum. El
Confidencial reported that the several convoys were sent in 20 trucks,
but the exact number of soldiers is not yet known.

Journal’s editorial page editors read their own newspaper? The frontpage
headline story for the Labor Day weekend was “Low Wage Growth
Challenges Fed.” Despite an alleged 4.4% unemployment rate, which is
full employment, there is no real growth in wages. The front page story
pointed out correctly that an economy alleged to be expanding at full
employment, but absent any wage growth or inflation, is “a puzzle that
complicates Federal Reserve policy decisions.”
On the editorial page itself,
under “letters to the editor,” Professor Tony Lima of California State
University points out what I have stressed for years: “The labor-force
participation rate remains at historic lows. Much of the decrease is in
the 18-34 age group, while participation rates have increased for those
55 and older.” Professor Lima points out that more evidence that the
American worker is not in good shape comes from the rising number of
Americans who can only find part-time work, which leaves them with
truncated incomes and no fringe benefits, such as health care.
Positioned right next to this factual letter is the lead editorial
written by someone who read neither the front page story or the
professor’s letter. The lead editorial declares: “The biggest labor
story this Labor Day is the trouble that employers are having finding
workers across the country.” The Journal’s editorial page editors
believe the solution to the alleged labor shortage is Senator Ron
Johnson’s (R.Wis.) bill to permit the states to give 500,000 work visas
to foreigners.
