"Populism
is a conservative ideology currently reigning contemporary political
discourse. Its strategy is to draw attention away from the real problem
and shift it onto a false enemy or intruder whose purging will bring
renewed harmony.

In the process, the reigning power is depicted
as the resistance, appearing sympathetic towards “the people” against an
imagined elite.

In contrast, democratic socialists like Bernie
Sanders or Jeremy Corbyn, described as “left populists,” oppose the
prevailing neoliberal capitalism. They assign blame to the
contradictions within the system, rather than some enemy or intruder who
disrupted the harmony of the system. “Left populism” is, therefore, a
misnomer.

Populism is the strategy of the right in the Trump era.
Whether it is the “fake media,” political correctness or migrant
labour, Trumpian politics always locates some enemy or intruder. This is
the populist strategy of reproducing dominance in the guise of
resistance.

This is what is truly troubling about the “It’s okay
to be white” campaign. It creates the confusing myth that the ruling

visited Assange in Ecuador’s embassy in London on three occasions, is
so full of holes that even hardened opponents of Assange in the
corporate media are struggling to stand by it.

Faced with the backlash, the Guardian quickly – and very quietly – rowed back its
initial certainty that its story was based on verified facts. Instead,
it amended the text, without acknowledging it had done so, to attribute
the claims to unnamed, and uncheckable, “sources”.

The Iron Fist Behind the Invisible Hand: Capitalism As a State-Guaranteed System of Privilege

"Manorialism,
commonly, is recognized to have been founded by robbery and usurpation;
a ruling class established itself by force, and then compelled the
peasantry to work for the profit of their lords. But no system of
exploitation, including capitalism, has ever been created by the action
of a free market. Capitalism was founded on an act of robbery as massive
as feudalism. It has been sustained to the present by continual state
intervention to protect its system of privilege, without which its
survival is unimaginable.

The current structure of capital
ownership and organization of production in our so-called "market"
economy, reflects coercive state intervention prior to and extraneous to
the market. From the outset of the industrial revolution, what is
nostalgically called "laissez-faire" was in fact a system of continuing
state intervention to subsidize accumulation, guarantee privilege, and
maintain work discipline.

Most such intervention is tacitly
assumed by mainstream right-libertarians as part of a "market" system.
Although a few intellectually honest ones like Rothbard and Hess were
willing to look into the role of coercion in creating capitalism, the
Chicago school and Randroids take existing property relations and class
power as a given. Their ideal "free market" is merely the current system
minus the progressive regulatory and welfare state--i.e., nineteenth
century robber baron capitalism.

But genuine markets have a value
for the libertarian left, and we shouldn't concede the term to our
enemies. In fact, capitalism--a system of power in which ownership and
control are divorced from labor--could not survive in a free market. As a
mutualist anarchist, I believe that expropriation of surplus
value--i.e., capitalism--cannot occur without state coercion to maintain
the privilege of usurer, landlord, and capitalist. It was for this
reason that the free market anarchist Benjamin Tucker--from whom
right-libertarians selectively borrow--regarded himself as a libertarian
socialist.

It is beyond my ability or purpose here to describe a
world where a true market system could have developed without such
state intervention. A world in which peasants had held onto their land
and property was widely distributed, capital was freely available to
laborers through mutual banks, productive technology was freely
available in every country without patents, and every people was free to
develop locally without colonial robbery, is beyond our imagination.
But it would have been a world of decentralized, small-scale production
for local use, owned and controlled by those who did the work--as
different from our world as day from night, or freedom from slavery.

He speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and, also, Catalan. In fact,
Catalan is the language in which his new book has appeared first. Thomas
Harrington, professor of Hispanic Studies at Trinity College in
Hartford, Connecticut, has just published Una democràcia cívica en temps
autoritaris - "A civic democracy in authoritarian times" (Gregal,
2018), a collection of the articles on the Catalan independence process
which the US academic has published over the last few years. Indeed,
from his North American vantage point, he warns of the "insignificance"
of a New York Times editorial mentioning Catalonia, in a country with a
huge capacity to forget the world beyond its frontiers. On the Catalan
referendum trial, which he sees as a "farce", he asserts that it is a
"great opportunity" for civil disobedience. But right now he doesn't see
the independence movement as having clear ideas on this.
