Volcano raises new island far south of Japan

A volcano formed a new island in seas far south of Tokyo after erupting on Wednesday and Thursday, the Japanese Coast Guard said.

The island, which is approximately 200 meters in diameter, is near a chain known as the Bonin Islands. About 30 islands make up the chain that is part of the seismically active “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean.

A coast guard volcanologist said the island could be eroded away; however, it is possible it could remain permanently.
