Petition | Bunge: Stop Growing Sugarcane On Guarani Land | Change.org

Petition | Bunge: Stop Growing Sugarcane On Guarani Land | Change.org:

Since US agribusiness Bunge started sourcing sugarcane from land that belonged to the Guarani tribe in Brazil, the business has brought pesticides and machinery that has damaged the health of the tribe, as well as restricting them to a small area, preventing them from hunting and practicing their traditions. Already this year two boys, aged 13 and 16, have committed suicide. This goes against Bunge Brazil's commitment to "Demonstrate social responsibility seeking to meet the needs of the communities where it operates", as it says on its website: http://www.bunge.com.br/Sustentabilidade/Politicas.aspx. We know it's possible to stop companies from conducting their damaging business in the area because earlier this year, Raizen, a biofuels company set up by Shell and COSAN scrapped controversial plans to source sugarcane from land stolen from the Guarani after a sustained campaign by the Indians and the NGO Survival International. Bunge aren't listening though, but enough people signing might be enough to sway them into action and respect the Guarani community.
