For the past three years, the Turkish government, led by now President
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been heavily involved, alongside Washington,
in helping fund and arm the Islamist militias, including ISIS, that
launched the civil war against Assad. It criticised the US last year for
shelving plans to bomb Syria.
