Iranians elect a new president on 19 May, when President Hassan Rohani
will be competing against five other candidates selected by the Guardian
Council. The contest will be played out around the recent nuclear deal,
the country’s economic policy, for which Rohani is heavily criticised,
and international relations since Donald Trump took office. In this
upcoming election, there are political tensions between reformers and
moderates reminiscent of those during the legislative elections of May
2016, on which Le Monde diplomatique reported direct from Tehran.
