Madrid relies on targeted political humiliation
The Spanish Court of Audit confiscated the house of former Catalan
regional president Artur Mas. Mas was at the head of the regional
government from 2010 to 2016. He is accused that an opinion poll he had
conducted in 2014 was in fact a referendum on Catalonia's independence.
Such a referendum would be illegal under the Spanish Constitution.
Therefore, the Court of Auditors now claims a total of 5.27 million
euros in public funds spent on the 2014 opinion poll.
