Warning of 'Planetary Catastrophe,' Putin Joins Calls for Diplomacy With North Korea | Common Dreams

As tensions continue to flare following North Korea's claim Sunday
that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb capable of being placed on
an intercontinental ballistic missile
(ICBM), Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday joined urgent calls
for deescalation and diplomacy, deeming the military option "a dead
end."

"Ramping up military
hysteria in such conditions is senseless. It could lead to a global,
planetary catastrophe and a huge loss of human life. There is no other
way to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, save that of peaceful
dialogue."

Putin went on to argue that U.S. interventions in Iraq
and Libya have convinced Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, that
nuclear weapons are a necessary deterrent.

Less than two days later, Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced that Trump had made a decision on the United States’ strategy for Afghanistan after a “sufficiently rigorous” review process. What
chiefly distinguishes liberal elites from the right on the issue of
climate change is that the former recognise the threat but only in the
abstract, while the right deny there is
even a theoretical threat. Our liberal politicians and media may not be
climate deniers, but they are climate concealers.

If that sounds harsh, consider how all western state and corporate
media have remained almost completely silent on the decisive role played
by man-made climate change in recent disastrous "news" events like
Hurricane Harvey, or the devastating floods in south Asia.

Here
was a chance to underline the pressing threat of climate change, and
address all the data that has been pouring in recently to confirm a
steady and catastrophic rise in global temperatures.

The
corporate media typically justify their silence about this growing body
of evidence on the grounds that it is difficult to make it interesting
or intelligible to the public. Here they had the ideal peg to hook that
data on, and yet they still could not raise their voices. In this
regard, the failings of the media, especially the BBC, which is paid for
by taxpayers and is supposed to have a public remit, were
unconscionable.

Rethinking Conspiracy | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization

The terms “conspiracy theorist” and “conspiracy nut” are used
frequently to discredit a perceived adversary using emotional rather
than logical appeals. It’s important for the sake of true argument that
we define the term “conspiracy” and use it appropriately, not as an ad
hominem attack on someone whose point of view we don’t share.

According to my Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary, the word
“conspiracy” derives from the Latin “conspirare,” which means literally
“to breathe together” in the sense of agreeing to commit a crime. The
primary definition is “planning and acting together secretly, especially
for a harmful or unlawful purpose, such as murder or treason.”

It was in this sense that Mark Twain astutely observed, “A conspiracy
is nothing but a secret agreement of a number of men for the pursuance
of policies which they dare not admit in public.”

Conspiracies are common. If they weren’t, police stations would not
need conspiracy units to investigate and prosecute crimes such as
“conspiracy to import cocaine” or any other collusion on the part of two
or more people to subvert the law.

approval of RNAi corn intended for human consumption, is so concerning,
it will first require a little background information on the fascinating
topic of non-coding small RNAs, and their formidable relevance to our
health.

Extreme weather is in our future. Caribbean hurricanes of the future
will be more and more violent and destructive because of manmade global
heating. Sea level rise will open the coast to bigger storm surges. The
number of coastal floods has already doubled
since the 1980s because of people driving their gasoline cars and
running their air conditioners off burning lumps of coal. Hotter air
over hotter water will have more moisture in it, setting the stage for
regular flooding. Hotter water creates more powerful winds within
hurricanes.

So the bad news is that a fossil fuel energy system does not deal well with extreme weather.

Even just by Thursday, Harvey had shut down so
many oil refineries that it had taken 20% of daily US gasoline
production off line. By Friday it was being announced that so many
refineries had been damaged that the major pipeline that brings 3
million barrels a day to the east coast, had been shut down. Altogether,
4.4 mn b/d of refinery capacity is off line now. About half a million
barrels a day of refining capacity will remain shut down well into next
winter.
