Humanity Imperiled: The Path to Disaster | Noam Chomsky

Humanity Imperiled: The Path to Disaster | Noam Chomsky:

What is the future likely to bring? A reasonable stance might be to try to look at the human species from the outside. So imagine that you're an extraterrestrial observer who is trying to figure out what's happening here or, for that matter, imagine you're an historian 100 years from now -- assuming there are any historians 100 years from now, which is not obvious -- and you're looking back at what's happening today. You'd see something quite remarkable.

For the first time in the history of the human species, we have clearly developed the capacity to destroy ourselves. That's been true since 1945. It's now being finally recognized that there are more long-term processes like environmental destruction leading in the same direction, maybe not to total destruction, but at least to the destruction of the capacity for a decent existence.

And there are other dangers like pandemics, which have to do with globalization and interaction. So there are processes underway and institutions right in place, like nuclear weapons systems, which could lead to a serious blow to, or maybe the termination of, an organized existence.

Amid spying scandal, billion-dollar NSA data center may secretly open — RT USA:

The new National Security Agency building in Bluffdale, Utah will be the most expensive facility in the NSA's history, but don't expect any sort of grand unveiling when it's finally functioning.

The $1.5 billion NSA data center is scheduled to officially open up this fall, but the Salt Lake Tribune is now reporting that the facility may already be up and running.

Thomas Burr of the Tribune wrote Thursday that the administrators of the state-of-the-art facility are staying silent when it comes to announcing information about the building, even though knowledge of its construction has been widely reported, and the NSA has become a mainstay in mainstream headlines since top-secret security documents were leaked to the media earlier this year.

"They Got Away With it" - White House Terror Chief Alleges CIA 9/11 Malfeasance and Cover Up

"They Got Away With it" - White House Terror Chief Alleges CIA 9/11 Malfeasance and Cover Up:

In a never-before-seen interview, Richard Clarke, former White House Counterterror "Tsar" to Presidents Clinton and Bush, goes on record about what he believes happened at the CIA in the run-up to the 9/11 attacks, accusing then-CIA Director George Tenet and two of his deputies of deliberately not informing the White House, FBI, and Defense Department about two future hijackers inside U.S., then covering it up after the 9/11 investigations.

This is another major story that the mainstream press never picked up on because it didn't fit neatly into the "government as innocent victim" narrative or the "let's poke fun at those crazy conspiracy theorists" box that form the two acceptable ways to cover 9/11.

The fact that these statements were made by Richard Clarke, the former White House Counter-terror Chief for both Presidents Clinton and Bush, would probably blow a few journalists minds, if they ever knew.

It may seem futile to publish stories about 9/11 at this point, when the possibility of a real investigation may forever be out of reach, but all the same, this information is important to setting the historical record straight.

It is one story among the dozens of newsworthy stories that fit inconveniently in between the black and white extremes of "nothing to see here: official edition" and "nothing to see here: unfounded conspiracy edition."

We thought you should know.

DCA shown to kill cancer cells, but Big Pharma has no interest in this inexpensive potential cure

DCA shown to kill cancer cells, but Big Pharma has no interest in this inexpensive potential cure:

(NaturalNews) A doctor and professor of medicine at the University of Alberta in Canada claims to have identified a novel substance that he says demonstrably kills cancer cells without causing harmful side effects and yet costs just pennies a dose. It is known as dichloroacetic acid, or DCA, and Dr. Evangelos Michelakis, M.D., believes it could be the next breakthrough treatment in the fight against cancer, that is if a government entity or pharmaceutical company would ever be willing to put forth appropriate funding for human clinical trials.

But this is unlikely to happen anytime soon, as there is currently no patent on DCA, and thus no incentive for private industry to research its potential benefits as a cancer treatment -- it's all about the money, after all, not public health. And governments are likely to ignore DCA as well, even though the medical research funds they disburse are intended for this very type of research, which is otherwise overlooked by the private sector in favor of more profitable undertakings.

U.S. to exhaust borrowing capacity by October 17

U.S. to exhaust borrowing capacity by October 17:

Jack Lew, U.S. Treasury Secretary, warned Congress that the United States would exhaust its borrowing capacity by Oct. 17, leaving about $30bn cash on hand. Lew urged Congress to raise $16.7 trillion borrowing limit to avoid upset in financial markets.

Lew's warning yesterday raised fears of a financial crisis and puts the government on the brink of financial default. The Congressional Budget Office also reported separately that the government would run out of free cash between Oct. 22 and Nov. 1.

Mr Lew's letter to congressional leaders said that one single day's net expenditure could be as high as $60bn, with money going out being excess of money coming in and the Treasury being forced to miss or delay payment of some bills.

Agriculture and drought : Nature : Nature Publishing Group

Agriculture and drought : Nature : Nature Publishing Group:

Drought has long been a scourge of humanity and a factor in war and conflict. The current crisis in Syria, for example, comes in the wake of one of its worst ever droughts. Periodic droughts occur because of global temperature cycles in the oceans and atmosphere. But although we understand the causes better, we are still at the mercy of an inherently chaotic weather system.

Add human-induced climate change to the mix and there is an extra incentive to do better. The greenhouse effect is predicted to raise temperatures and prolong droughts (page S2). Many agricultural pests are expected to thrive (S15). All these pressures are putting a squeeze on supplies of fresh water. Farmers need to know how to grow more while using less of this precious commodity (S4).

One such major victory, which occurred as a result of activism and overall outrage from the public, is the announcement by Senators that they are going to ‘kill’ the Monsanto Protection Act renewal legislation. The Monsanto Protection Act, as you are probably aware, was of course the legislative rider (a slippery way to including law into a bill that is oftentimes irrelevant) that granted Monsanto legal immunity for its crops up until September 30th of 2013.

A rider that some slimy senators were attempted to renew for additional months.

The Shocking Reason Why the Rich Are Getting Richer Explained Beautifully in 3 Minutes

The Shocking Reason Why the Rich Are Getting Richer Explained Beautifully in 3 Minutes:

Because 97% of the money in the UK is created by banks, someone must pay interest on nearly every pound in the circulation. This interest redistributes money from the bottom 90% of the population to the very top 10%. The bottom 90% of the UK pays more interest to banks that they ever receive from them, which results in a redistribution of income from the bottom 90% of the population to the top 10%. Collectively we pay £165m every day in interest on personal loans alone (not including mortgages), and a total of £213bn a year in interest on all our debts.

25 Fast Facts About The Federal Reserve | Live Free, Live Natural

25 Fast Facts About The Federal Reserve | Live Free, Live Natural:

As we approach the 100 year anniversary of the creation of the Federal Reserve, it is absolutely imperative that we get the American people to understand that the Fed is at the very heart of our economic problems. It is a system of money that was created by the bankers and that operates for the benefit of the bankers. The American people like to think that we have a “democratic system”, but there is nothing “democratic” about the Federal Reserve. Unelected, unaccountable central planners from a private central bank run our financial system and manage our economy. There is a reason why financial markets respond with a yawn when Barack Obama says something about the economy, but they swing wildly whenever Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke opens his mouth. The Federal Reserve has far more power over the U.S. economy than anyone else does by a huge margin. The Fed is the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of the world, and if the American people truly understood how it really works, they would be screaming for it to be abolished immediately. The following are 25 fast facts about the Federal Reserve that everyone should know…

Slow Money took root when founder Woody Tasch, a poet and former venture capitalist, wrote the book Inquiries Into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms, and Fertility Mattered. As Woody traveled the country to promote his book, he encountered a groundswell of people who resonated with his ideas. UK detention of Reprieve activist consistent with NSA's view of drone opponents as 'threats' and 'adversaries' | Glenn Greenwald | Comment is free | theguardian.com:

A well-known and highly respected Yemeni anti-drone activist was detained yesterday by UK officials under that country's "anti-terrorism" law at Gatwick Airport, where he had traveled to speak at an event. Baraa Shiban, the project co-ordinator for the London-based legal charity Reprieve, was held for an hour and a half and repeatedly questioned about his anti-drone work and political views regarding human rights abuses in Yemen.

When he objected that his political views had no relevance to security concerns, UK law enforcement officials threatened to detain him for the full nine hours allowed by the Terrorism Act of 2000, the same statute that was abused by UK officials last month to detain my partner, David Miranda, for nine hours.

Shiban tells his story today, here, in the Guardian, and recounts how the UK official told him "he had detained me not merely because I was from Yemen, but also because of Reprieve's work investigating and criticising the efficacy of US drone strikes in my country."

Dozens of Nepalese migrant labourers have died in Qatar in recent weeks and thousands more are enduring appalling labour abuses, a Guardian investigation has found, raising serious questions about Qatar's preparations to host the 2022 World Cup.

This summer, Nepalese workers died at a rate of almost one a day in Qatar, many of them young men who had sudden heart attacks. The investigation found evidence to suggest that thousands of Nepalese, who make up the single largest group of labourers in Qatar, face exploitation and abuses that amount to modern-day slavery, as defined by the International Labour Organisation, during a building binge paving the way for 2022.

Activist Post: The 12 Principles of Enslavement:

There were always people who wanted to control others and by imposing their will secure their existence, materially and spiritually. There were always spiritual guides who wanted nothing but the best for their students and then there were guides who used their students for their own gains. Whether talking of secular or religious world, principles of controlling others are very similar, it's all about disconnecting people from their source, from God, disconnecting people form each other, and about taking control of their mind.

Generally, we people are very uncertain as to what are we doing in this world, of what we really want, of who we really are. Deep down we feel insecure, confused and disconnected and this makes us frightened. This is a fertile ground for the manipulators of the world to work on.

Rep. Canales responds to communities’ concerns over random DPS checkpoints and possible targeting of poor neighborhoods in the Valley - News - Your Valley Voice

Random road checkpoints being set up in deep South Texas by the Texas Department of Public Safety have raised serious concerns among Valley residents, including questions on why certain areas in Hidalgo County appear to be targeted. Rep. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg, wants the state police agency to provide justification for their actions.

A checkpoint is a place along a road or border where vehicles are stopped for inspection.

According to Canales, he has received reports from constituents that the DPS road checkpoints being conducted “seem to be placed in economically disadvantaged areas. Checkpoints have been set up in Alton, the east side of Pharr, a portion of Alamo, but none, so far, along highly-traveled roadways in wealthier parts of the county, such as along Trenton or Dove roads in northeast McAllen.”

Beginning Sunday, the Texas Department of Public Safety has temporarily increased its patrol presence in the Rio Grande Valley and establishing “regulatory checkpoints” to check driver's licenses and other registration requirements, according to a news release the agency issued Friday afternoon.

“Law enforcement has identified various criminal activities and unsafe driving behaviors in south Texas that has led to the launch of this short-term enforcement effort in the Rio Grande Valley,” the release stated.

The release did not specify — and a DPS spokesman declined to comment on — how many additional troopers will be in the area for how long. Also unclear is the manner of the checkpoints, how many will be in operation or where they’ll be.

The area, known as Loliondo, will instead remain with the Maasai, who the Prime Minister said have taken ‘good care of the area’ since ‘time immemorial’.

“This is the last day of your life”, said Reina María’s ex-partner as he walked into her house in February this year, holding a machete in his hand.

After he attacked her with the blade, he left her for dead, bleeding on the floor as her two children, aged five and nine, ran to get help from a neighbour.

Fortunately, Reina María survived. When I met her this week, she showed me the long, deep scars across her arm, shoulder and the back of her neck.

Although her ex-partner is the person who wielded the machete, the Nicaraguan state is responsible for leaving Reina María at risk of attack for over a year.

Along this track, the film looks behind the scenes of politics and Group walls - and provides sobering to: Tax avoidance has long since become a huge industry and their lobby is huge.

The challenge is that it takes consciousness to grow consciousness. But you needn’t worry about this because you already have the seed. Think of it like fire. You have a flame, and you want to turn that flame into a huge blaze. How do you do it? You add fuel. The following list includes examples of how you can add fuel to your flame of consciousness to become a raging inferno of consciousness.

New reports indicate that untold numbers of Vietnamese civilians, former soldiers and others exposed to the highly toxic chemical back in the 1960s and 1970s continue to develop terminal illnesses like cancer, as well as suffer from all sorts of other herbicide-induced health horrors.

Oil theft in the Niger Delta doesn’t explain all the oil spills | Amnesty's global human rights blog

Oil theft in the Niger Delta doesn’t explain all the oil spills | Amnesty's global human rights blog:

By Audrey Gaughran, Director of Global Thematic Issues at Amnesty International

There are currently two competing narratives about oil pollution in the Niger Delta.

The first is that oil companies, particularly Shell, are responsible for massive pollution caused by leaks from their operations and for the failure to clean up spills and protect their infrastructure from damage.

This narrative acknowledges that oil theft and sabotage of oil infrastructure occur and contribute to pollution; however it cautions that theft and sabotage, as causes of pollution, are over-stated by oil companies in a bid to deflect criticism about their environmental impact.

There’s something profoundly despicable about a Justice Department that would brazenly violate the First and Fourth Amendments while spying on journalists, then claim to be reassessing such policies after an avalanche of criticism — and then proceed, as it did this week, to gloat that those policies made possible a long prison sentence for a journalistic source.

Welcome to the Obama Justice Department.

Natural News Blogs Discover a Common Vegetable to Cure Skin Cancer » Natural News Blogs:

When it comes to skin cancer, Big Pharma offers only topical chemo creams and surgery. The chemo creams usually don’t work but often do cause ugly, painful side effects. Removing skin cancer tumors surgically usually results with tumors resurfacing sooner or later. And surgeries often leave large ugly scars.

However, there are inexpensive, effective, safe cures for curing skin cancer that are banned or ignored and marginalized by medical mafia and not publicized by the mainstream media.

Rick Simpson’s hemp oil (with THC and cannabiniods) is probably the most effective. Of course, unless you live in a state that allows medical marijuana and is not so restrictive with that process, your chances of getting that oil are very slim. Maybe if you’re adventurous enough, you can make your own or go underground to procure it.

Then there are escharotic salves, which can be a bit dicey because they are caustic. But they are effective. One of the components, blood root, was part of Harry Hoxsey’s topical skin cancer escharotic solutions that demonstrated efficacy for even melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer that’s able to metastasize into internal organs.

It explores the taboo that has been effective in shielding the American government’s narrative of the events of 9/11 from scholarly examination. Through a powerful reflection on intellectual courage and the purpose of academia, the film aims at changing intellectual discourse on 9/11 and the War on Terror.

Noam Chomsky on the era of the drone | Noam Chomsky interviewed by Steven Garbas

Noam Chomsky on the era of the drone | Noam Chomsky interviewed by Steven Garbas

NC: Just driving in this morning I was listening to NPR news. The program opened by announcing, very excitedly, that the drone industry is exploding so fast that colleges are trying to catch up and opening new programs in the engineering schools and so on, and teaching drone technology because that's what students are dying to study because of the fantastic number of jobs going on.

And it's true. If you look at the public reports, you can imagine what the secret reports are. It's been known for a couple of years, but we learn more and more that drones, for one thing, are already being given to police departments for surveillance. And they are being designed for every possible purpose. I mean, theoretically, maybe practically, you could have a drone the size of a fly which could be buzzing around over there [points to window] listening to what we're talking about. And I'd suspect that it won't be too long before that becomes realistic.

And of course they are being used to assassinate. There's a global assassination campaign going on which is pretty interesting when you look into how it's done. I presume everyone's read the front page of the New York Times story, which is more or less a leak from the White House, because they are apparently proud of how the global assassination campaign works. Basically President Obama and his national security advisor, John Brennan, now head of the CIA, get together in the morning. And Brennan's apparently a former priest. They talk about St. Augustine and his theory of just war, and then they decide who is going to be killed today.

Inequality For All (trailer) | Watch Now:

A passionate argument on behalf of the middle class, INEQUALITY FOR ALL features Robert Reich—professor, best-selling author, and Clinton cabinet member—as he demonstrates how the widening income gap has a devastating impact on the American economy.

The film is an intimate portrait of a man who's overcome a great deal of personal adversity and whose lifelong goal remains protecting those who are unable to protect themselves. Through his singular perspective, Reich explains how the massive consolidation of wealth by a precious few threatens the viability of the American workforce and the foundation of democracy itself.

In this INCONVENIENT TRUTH for the economy, Reich uses humor and a wide array of facts to explain how the issue of economic inequality affects each and every one of us.

One of the things that happened after the shootings, as it unfortunately often does, was that "conspiracy theories" about the attacks started to spring up.

In April 2009, I wrote an article that addresses the practice of saying every horrible thing that happens is a "conspiracy" entitled, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf."

CMD, the creators of ALECexposed.org—a web resource that shines a light on the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and its dealings with U.S. lawmakers—says the new web-tool, OutsourcingAmericaEXPOSED.org, will provide weekly "corporate profiles of America’s most notorious corporations that are quietly working with state and local lawmakers to take over public services with little accountability."

"Across the country, for-profit companies are engaged in a hostile takeover of our schools, roads, prisons, drinking water, and even local government itself," said Lisa Graves, Executive Director of the CMD, adding that the "project will give taxpayers the tools they need to identify these privatizers and profiteers, their eye-popping salaries, and the raw deals contained in their contracts that puts taxpayers on the hook, and it will tell taxpayers how they can take back control of public assets and public services."

Ecological economist Dave Batker questions whether GDP is an adequate measure of society's well-being and suggests workable alternatives.

In this film produced by John de Graaf of AFFLUENZA fame, ecological economist Dave Batker presents a humorous, edgy, factual, timely and highly-visual monologue about the American economy today, challenging the ways we measure economic success--especially the Gross Domestic Product--and offering an answer to the question: What's the Economy for, Anyway?

Using Gifford Pinchot's idea that the economy's purpose is "the greatest good for the greatest number over the longest run," Batker compares the performance of the U.S. economy with that of other industrial countries in terms of providing a high quality of life, fairness and ecological sustainability, concluding that when you do the numbers, we come out near the bottom in nearly every category.

Batker shines a humorous light on such economic buzzwords as "productivity," and "consumer sovereignty," while offering ideas for "capitalism with a human face," a new economic paradigm that meets the real needs of people and the planet.

Affluenza (1997) | Watch Documentary Free Online:

AFFLUENZA is a groundbreaking film that diagnoses a serious social disease - caused by consumerism, commercialism and rampant materialism - that is having a devastating impact on our families, communities, and the environment. We have more stuff, but less time, and our quality of life seems to be deteriorating. By using personal stories, expert commentary, hilarious old film clips, and "uncommercial" breaks to illuminate the nature and extent of the disease, AFFLUENZA has appealed to widely diverse audiences: from freshmen orientation programs to consumer credit counseling, and from religious congregations to marketing classes.

With the help of historians and archival film, AFFLUENZA reveals the forces that have dramatically transformed us from a nation that prized thriftiness - with strong beliefs in "plain living and high thinking" - into the ultimate consumer society.

The program ends with a prescription to cure the disease. A growing number of people are opting out of the consumer chase, and choosing "voluntary simplicity" instead. They are working and shopping less, spending more time with friends and family, volunteering in their communities, and enjoying their lives more.

Corroding Our Democracy: Canada Silences Scientists, Targets Environmentalists in Tar Sands Push | Democracy Now!

Five years ago this month, the firm TransCanada submitted a permit request to build the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would bring tar sands oil from Canada to refineries on the Gulf Coast. The project has sparked one of the nation’s most contentious environmental battles in decades. The Obama administration initially appeared ready to approve Keystone XL, but an unprecedented wave of activism from environmentalists and residents of the states along its path has forced several delays. Among those pressuring Obama for Keystone XL’s approval is the Canadian government, which recently offered a greater pledge of reduced carbon emissions if the pipeline is built. We’re joined by one of Canada’s leading environmental activists, Tzeporah Berman, who has campaigned for two decades around clean energy, and is the former co-director of Greenpeace International’s Climate Unit. She is now focused on stopping tar sands extraction as a member of the steering committee for the Tar Sands Solutions Network. Berman is also the co-founder of ForestEthics and is the author of the book "This Crazy Time: Living Our Environmental Challenge." Berman discusses how the Canadian government is muzzling scientists speaking out on global warming, quickly changing environmental laws, and why she believes the push for tar sands extraction has created a "perfect storm" of grassroots activism bring together environmentalists, indigenous communities and rural landowners.

These talks can range in subject and have included science, politics, entrepreneurship, consciousness, cosmology, inventions and more. As TED’s popularity grew, TEDx talks sprung up around the globe which gave a less moderated voice to inspiring people. As a result, TED has been involved in controversy as they chose to censor various talks they deemed worthy of their censorship. The issue is, these talks are of great importance and TED’s decision to censor them reveals their interest in preserving their own brand while not getting in trouble with the ‘big wigs.’ Here are the talks TED felt were ‘Ideas not worth spreading.’

Synchronicity, Myth, and the New World Order

Synchronicity, Myth, and the New World Order

Looking out upon the horrid ruin we seem to have made of the planet, in spite of the kind hearts and good intentions of the vast majority of human beings, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that some nefarious force has hijacked civilization, driving it towards ends that serve almost no one.

If we are headed for a future that no one would consciously choose, it stands to reason, some say, that we are not choosing; that something else, unfriendly to human welfare, is choosing for us.

Deeper study of certain pivotal events in history strengthens this conclusion. The official explanations of the Kennedy assassination or 9/11 are riddled with contradictions that are difficult to explain. Ominous coincidences pile up and make patterns, pointing toward a conscious agency orchestrating these events toward sinister goals. Diving deeper, one discovers patterns of patterns that ultimately coalesce into an alternate history of the world.

The alternate history explains world events as resulting from the machinations of a powerful, dark cabal of secret organizations comprising the global elite: the banks, wealthy families like the Rockefellers and Rothschilds, non-official organizations like the Bilderburg Council, organized crime, shadowy agencies within the government, secret societies like Skull and Bones and the Freemasons, and so on. Behind them all is a group even more secret, comprising the true rulers of earth, who count even prime ministers and presidents among their puppets.

Must See Chart: This Is What Class War Looks Like:

This chart puts the class war in simple, visual terms. On the left you have the "shared sacrifices" and "painful cuts" that the Republicans claim we must make to get our fiscal house in order. On the right, you can plainly see WHY these cuts are "necessary."

The reason? Because we already gave away all that money to America's wealthiest individuals and corporations.

This just mirrors what we're seeing in Wisconsin, where Governor Walker (R-Koch) claims that ordinary public sector workers need to fork over at least $137 million to save the budget. Problem is, he just gave away $117 million in tax breaks for his corporate pals. This is out and out class warfare. The big corporations in America have decided that they can get even richer by raiding the public treasury. It's time for the middle class to stand up and defend itself!
