Biometric Headset Uses Rage Sensors to Condition Gamers - Susanne Posel | Susanne Posel:

Designer Sam Matson has developed a headset called Immersion that can track when gamers get angry.

Matson has worked as a designer for Samsung, IBM and Nike.

Using biometric sensors to track the gamer’s heart rate; Immersion can anticipate the user’s mood and make in-game adjustments.

In other words, once a gamer becomes emotional over the course of a game, the game becomes harder. Conversely, when the gamer calms down, the game becomes easier.

The psychology behind Immersion stems from operant conditioning that describes a system of learning that focuses on reinforcement of behavior based on factors within the immediate environment.

Immersion uses positive punishment when the gamer’s behavior becomes enraged and remains so until the gamer calms down or quits.
