Merkel calls for separate EU internet - Europe - Al Jazeera English:

 Angela Merkel has said she wants to create a European communications network that avoids data transfer through servers in the US.

The German chancellor has been pushing for greater data protection following revelations of mass US surveillance in Germany, but many doubt the feasibility of her plan.
