On 23 May 2014, Barbara Ward, the founder of the International Institute for Environment and Development, would have been 100 years old.
To mark the centenary, and to pay tribute to one of the first champions of sustainable development, IIED commissioned a series of interviews, blogs and videos about a woman who was the friend and advisor of world leaders including two US presidents, several UK prime ministers, and heads of state from Africa and Asia. Time magazine called her one of the 20th century's most influential visionaries.
Included in this edited montage of some Ward's most famous quotes and interviews is footage from the 1972 film Survival of Spaceship Earth.
There is also footage of US President John F Kennedy addressing the centennial of Boston College and announcing an honorary degree for "our friend in freedom". The footage appears by kind permission of Boston College.
The music used, fittingly, is called 'Lasting Hope'.
