Critics Condemn EU-Turkey Deal That Turned Refugees Into Bargaining Chips

The draconian deal on refugees between the EU and Turkey has been
described as "a direct assault on the very principle of international
protection for those fleeing war and persecution." We are already seeing
the consequences of this deal with footage showing a Turkish coastguard
vessel seemingly trying to sink a boat full of men, women and children.
We will be judged by future generations on how we respond right now. It
is worth remembering that Anne Frank and her family were denied asylum
in the United States during WWII when anti-imigrant rhetoric was very
similar to what we're seeing today. These are the families seeking
refuge in Europe today.

the EU's 28 divided nations convened in Brussels on Friday to discuss a
deal that critics say amounts to "trading refugees" for financial and
political interests.
