A
few weeks ago, I posted a link to an excellent historical overview of
Zionism's systematic dispossession of the Palestinians. Unfortunately it
was behind the Haaretz paywall, and
doubtless some of you were unable to access it. It is now been published
by Mondoweiss in a slightly adapted form.
(Note: This version makes no mention of the fact that author Yair
Svorai's parents were leading members of the Stern Gang, which he
correctly described in Haaretz as a Jewish terrorist organisation, or
that they went on to help found a settlement in the West Bank.)
Svorai writes of what Israel has built in historic Palestine: "This is
nothing short of new-age apartheid, where the indigenous population is
not only of no value to its colonial masters – not even as a source of
cheap labor – but it is essential for the success of the colonial
project that it be removed: the more of 'them' that are gone, the better
off 'we' are. That people-removal process is called ethnic cleansing."
I recommend it.
The town of Wadi Fukin, with a population of 1,300, is dwarfed by the
nearby settlement of Beitar Illit, which is home to 45,000
ultra-Orthodox Jewish Israelis. Just after the Gaza War, on August 31,
2014, Israel announced its intention to seize 1,000 acres of land near
the Palestinians villages of Wadi Fukin and Jab’a (Photo: Andrew
