The last time capitalism faced a crisis this deep, it was 1929.
People minded the Great Depression. All those people Joe McCarthy
persecuted in the 1950s for having joined the Communist Party when they
were young and angry had been angry because of the Great Depression.
Specifically, they were angry at capitalists, especially bankers, whom
they blamed for kicking millions out of their homes or off their land.
Bank robbers even became celebrities. Semi-socialist policies like
social security were implemented by FDR in part out of fear of popular
anger.

It wasn’t Donald Trump or alt-NeoNazi Steve Bannon who was mainly
responsible for taking the US back out of the Paris climate accord.

It was the Koch Brothers and the rest of Big Oil, and Big Gas, and Big Coal.

It was “energy” corporations who have vast inventories of worthless
fossil fuels that they want to unload on the marks quick before
everybody realizes they have all the usefulness for human beings of
eating arsenic.

Cholera Cases in Yemen May Reach 130,000 in Two Weeks, UNICEF Warns | Common Dreams

With about 70,000 cholera cases reported with nearly 600 fatalities in Yemen, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) today warned that an already dire situation for children is turning into a disaster.

"Cholera doesn't need a permit to cross a checkpoint or a border, nor
does it differentiate between areas of political control," said UNICEF Regional Director, Geert Cappelaere, following his visit to the war-torn country.

"Cholera is spreading incredibly fast in Yemen […] The number of
suspected cases is expected to reach 130,000 within the next two weeks,"
he warned.

He said he witnessed harrowing scenes of children who were barely
alive—tiny babies weighing less than two kilos—fighting for their lives
at one of the few functioning hospitals he visited.

"But they are the lucky ones. Countless children around Yemen die
every day in silence from causes that can easily be prevented or treated
like cholera, diarrhoea or malnutrition," he said.

Today, June 1st 2017, WikiLeaks publishes documents from the "Pandemic"
project of the CIA, a persistent implant for Microsoft Windows machines
that share files (programs) with remote users in a local network.
"Pandemic" targets remote users by replacing application code on-the-fly
with a trojaned version if the program is retrieved from the infected
machine. To obfuscate its activity, the
original file on the file server remains unchanged; it is only
modified/replaced while in transit from the pandemic file server before
being executed on the computer of the remote user. The implant allows
the replacement of up to 20 programs with a maximum size of 800 MB for a
selected list of remote users (targets).

As the name suggests, a single computer on a local network with shared
drives that is infected with the "Pandemic" implant will act like a
"Patient Zero" in the spread of a disease. It will infect remote
computers if the user executes programs stored on the pandemic file
server. Although not explicitly stated in the documents, it seems
technically feasible that remote computers that provide file shares
themselves become new pandemic file servers on the local network to
reach new targets.

two-parts investigation into Monsanto's "war on science", its attempts
to destroy the "gold standard" in cancer assessment, the International
Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC).

You certainly know the reason: this agency found that glyphosate probably causes cancer in humans, and this might cause a ban under EU legislation and triggered numerous lawsuits in the US.

For this, Monsanto is using all it can, from trolls to smear IARC
scientists' personal reputation, hired scientists to undermine IARC's
assessment, to lobbying the US, Canadian and Australian governments to
cut their funding to IARC. And many more revelations thanks to the
"Monsanto Papers".

Brexit, Trump

The West is splitting apart with the EU27 undoubtedly headed in the
direction of more, not less, European integration most significantly on
military and defense policy with a more
independent and assertive European Union military and foreign policy no
longer bound by the wishes of the United States and held up by the
blocking tactics of the United Kingdom. It will be interesting to see
this more united Europe emerge as a more forceful player on the global
stage and with it what the effects will be on the cohesion and efficacy
of the Atlantic Alliance.
