Palestinian baby killed in suspected Jewish extremist attack

According to the military, the suspects entered the village of Duma,
near the city of Nablus, where they set the homes ablaze and scrawled
graffiti, including "Long live the Messiah," ''revenge" and "price tag."

The attackers threw Molotov cocktails, or fire bombs, at the houses, the military said.

The slain child was identified as one-and-a-half year old Ali
Dawabsheh. His four-year-old brother and parents were among the wounded,
according to Gassan Daghlas, a Palestinian official from the Nablus
area.

Daghlas said Jewish settlers broke the window of a house
and flung a burning object inside, "causing a quick and huge fire." He
added that three people were wounded aside from the child. The Israeli
military said three people were critically wounded and one was slightly
injured. The critically wounded were taken to Israeli hospitals for
treatment, the military said.

"Setters in the Nablus area are
very aggressive. They never stop attacking Palestinians in their
villages and the Israeli government needs to put an end to these
aggressions," Daghlas said.

The Israeli military said it sent troop reinforcements to the West Bank, fearing the incident could trigger unrest.

Jewish extremists have for years attacked Palestinian property, as well
as mosques, churches and even Israeli military bases in opposition to
what they see as the Israeli government's favorable policies toward the
Palestinians, although it is rare for anyone to be killed in such
attacks.

Critics say police have been slow to apprehend the
assailants and Palestinians say the military has failed to protect them
from attacks by militant Jewish settlers in the West Bank.

The
attacks, known as "price tag," have been condemned across the Israeli
political spectrum and condemnations came swiftly Friday, with Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issuing a stern statement against the
violence.

"I am shocked over this reprehensible and horrific act.
This is an act of terrorism in every respect. The State of Israel takes
a strong line against terrorism regardless of who the perpetrators
are," he said.

Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner called the incident "nothing short of a barbaric act of terrorism."

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said Israel would not allow "Jewish terrorists" to carry out such acts.

"We will not allow Jewish terrorists to harm the lives of Palestinians
in Judea and Samaria," he said in a statement, referring to the West
Bank by its biblical name. "We will fight against them firmly and with
all means and tools at our disposal."

Meanwhile, Israeli police
said they would restrict entrance to Friday prayers at a Jerusalem
mosque to male worshippers over the age of 50. Police said the decision
was not necessarily related to the West Bank incident and comes as
police received word that Palestinian youth at the mosque planned to
cause disturbances.

We Have Failed Afghanistan Again and Again | Common Dreams | Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

We Have Failed Afghanistan Again and Again

The 2013 death of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, confirmed this week, should have marked the end of the U.S. war in Afghanistan. But the fates of the two main leaders identified as responsible for the 9/11 attacks—Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar—are only milestones. Thanks to the destructive nature of the U.S. war, many newer and more formidable enemies have emerged.

America’s first post-9/11 war, launched in Afghanistan in October 2001, is a grand symbol of our foreign policy failure. Fourteen years ago, Afghans were caught between two brutal and fundamentalist factions: the Taliban and the Northern Alliance. Today they are caught between four: the Taliban, government warlords who morphed from the Northern Alliance, U.S. forces and Islamic State.

But just a few months ago, Afghanistan’s first transition of power within an ostensibly democratic system took place, offering the promise of a better future under the U.S.-educated President Ashraf Ghani. The U.S. was to withdraw its forces and NATO nations had already begun doing so. Government-sponsored peace talks with the Taliban were meant to herald a stable future for the war-weary nation. But that future never came and what appeared as progress was only a facade.

Rebutgem les sancions per la xiulada a l’himne espanyol a la final de Copa del Rei | Òmnium Cultural

The
Spanish Government fines Barça and several Catalan social organizations
more than a million euros for allowing freedom of expression

Last
30th May, during the Spanish King’s Cup Final between Barça and
Athletic de Bilbao in Camp Nou, both teams’ supporters massively
whistled the Spanish anthem and waved flags in favour of Catalan
independence.

Now
the Spanish Government has decided to punish and fine both clubs and
several pro-Catalan independence small organizations because of inaction
in front of this political revendication and appeals to the due respect
and defense of “national symbols”. The overall fines exceed 1 million
€.

The
Platform Pro Catalan Teams (a platform which seeks the acceptance of
Catalan teams in international competitions), Òmnium Cultural and the
Catalan National Assembly strongly oppose the decision to punish and
fine the whistling of the Spanish anthem. We consider it a decision
against freedom of speech. Both clubs’ supporters were only peacefully
expressing their own revendications and political opinions by means of
whistling.

The
attitude of the Spanish Government is an exercise of political
repression and brings us the sour memories of Franco’s regime, which
still survives in the minds and hearts of the political actions of some
Spanish political leaders. Such curtailment is part of the Spanish
government’s strategy to reduce the citizens’ rights, especially those
who legitimately aim at a different political future, and finds no
comparison in other democratic states.

We
fully support both teams’ fans, their respective clubs and the civil
society organizations that have been threatened, in order to respond
together to this new attack.

The ABC, SBS and Australia Post could lose special regulatory treatment under trade measures being pushed for by the US.

Leaked details of the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership trade negotiations, published today by WikiLeaks, reveal that the futures of publicly owned enterprises such as Australia Post, the ABC, SBS and state power utilities may be on the negotiating table in secret talks under way in Hawaii this week.

WikiLeaks has published previously unknown details of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations relating to the treatment of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) – publicly owned corporations that do not operate along strictly commercial lines and deliver benefits to the community as a whole.

African Americans Face More Danger Than Others in US Police Custody - NGO

The recent reported run of suspicious deaths in police custody confirms that African Americans are in more peril when arrested than other groups in the United States, advocacy group PoliceAbuse.com Executive Director Diop Kamau told Sputnik.

“It’s a sad statement of the condition of the general criminal justice system and the police in particular, but I think that the inherent danger for African Americans is higher than any other group in custody, and this string of deaths bears out that statement,” Kamau said on Tuesday.

Kamau was speaking after a young African American woman, Ralkina Jones, was found dead in an Ohio jail cell after being arrested over a row with her husband.

The activist noted the chances of being seriously hurt as a minority arrested for any sort of disruptive behaviour were very high, but added that such dangers existed across the United States for white people too.

Kamau blamed a lack of training and education among jail employees on how to properly deal with challenging situations.

“A jail staffer is paid significantly less than police officers, they’re trained much less than officers are trained, and they are inclined to take any sort of provocation and escalate it in many ways worse than an officer might on the street,” Kamau said.

Jones’ case is the latest in a series of suspicious deaths in police detention that have prompted protests and calls for police reforms.

Earlier in July, African American activist Sandra Bland was was found dead in her detention cell after allegedly hanging herself with a garbage bag following her controversial arrest by a Texas state trooper. The Texas authorities determined the death was a suicide, but Bland’s family has demanded an investigation.

On July 14, 2015, Native American Rexdale Henry was also found dead in his prison cell in Mississippi for unknown reasons. Henry, a member of the Choctaw Native American tribe, was previously arrested for not paying a traffic fine.

Marxist View of the Drugs Trade

Why we need to see drugs in a different way

Today, if you ask a member of the British public what they think of
drugs you will often find that those who deal and consume drugs are
often viewed in a criminal way, as a blight on an otherwise good society
and that every ill in society would solve itself if it wasn’t for the
drugs trade. It is also the view that the agents of law enforcement
benevolently try their best, in vain, against what is perceived
to be the “social scourge” that individuals who usually trade these
narcotic consumer goods are portrayed to be. This view is so universal
that it is hard to dislodge, since every institution from the corporate
media to the church denounces the drugs trade and urge the keeping of
the prohibition. This is where a sober analysis of this trade becomes
crucial. What is missing is an analysis which looks for much larger,
intractable problems than the simple Hollywood inspired ‘good cop vs.
bad dealer’ and this is what a Marxist analysis does. It aims to show
the real effects the war on drugs has and how the drugs prohibition
helps to keep the profits flowing for the mega rich and how it keeps the
powerful in power.

Tisa vs. New Development Bank: two conflicting proposals

The central banks of BRICS block betting on New Development Bank, while the core countries to free trade in services, called Tisa.

The central banks of the bloc known by the acronym BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) ended on July 7 last one that regulates the operation of the New Development Bank (NBD) agreement and the Reserve Fund Contingency . The same was described by the head of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena, "the most important since the creation of the Bretton Woods multilateral financial agreement".

The aim of the bank, which has an initial capital of 50,000 million dollars that then extended to 100,000 million and whose members account for 27% of global GDP, will finance major development projects in the bloc . Meanwhile, the fund reserves (100,000 million dollars) will be used to provide loans to the participating countries in case of problems of liquidity in dollars. Thus, the BRICS seek to establish alternatives to traditional hegemonic institutions such as the IMF or the World Bank, and transform them into sources of financing from a more inclusive vision, continuing the search for higher levels of financial independence from large powers.

 Western-Imposed Holocaust

Beneath the cover of lies and deceptions, the West is willfully conducting a holocaust overseas.

Private Public Relations agencies, such as the Rendron Group, [i] are hired by the U.S government and its agencies, including the CIA and USAID, to conduct propaganda campaigns that hide the truth from unwitting audiences at home and abroad. (Most people would not support wars of aggression if they knew the truth.)

The lies are obscene but legal. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), empowers the U.S State department and the Pentagon to use any media to propagate any version of the "truth" that it wants to propagate. [ii]

"Democracy" and "Freedom"[iii], for example, are often promoted as reasons for illegal regime change, even as the messaging invariably proves to be entirely false.

Beneath these lies, the truth eventually unfolds, and the truth is that the West invades and destroys other countries so that it can dominate, control, and plunder targeted countries. Compliant comprador regimes are set up, typically with the help of proxies, and often with off-the-books funding -- courtesy of the illegal drug trade.

Imperial war planners are not burdened by ethics or the rule of law, and the depths to which they sink is unimaginable.

The illegal invasion of Iraq, sold to the world through about 935 oft repeated lies [iv] provides a window into the abyss of depravity:

War planners knew in advance that sanctions would destroy water treatment plants -- necessary for human survival -- and that this, therefore, would decimate the population. A leaked cable, dated January 1991,[v] reveals foreknowledge of the consequences. Point 28 of the cable states that "Full degradation of the water treatment system probably will take at least 6 months."

Report: McDonald’s Global Profits Are Continuing to Fall

Millions continue to reject fast food

The decline of fast food giant McDonald’s continues in full
swing, as the company reports yet another quarter of ‘disappointing’
global losses.

I’ve been telling you about McDonald’s decline
for quite some time now, as millions of informed eaters continue to
turn to higher quality food options when it comes to feeding themselves
and their families.

More and more individuals are realizing what’s really in their food,
and they’re taking action. And as they begin to read food labels,
research toxic additives, and even find out about GMOs, McDonald’s is
always a ‘poster child’ for everything wrong with the food industry.

That’s why, as you may remember, McDonald’s has decided to stop reporting their monthly losses altogether to their investors. Because they’re losing so many customers, and even major news outlets are highlighting the company’s demise.

Wall Street and Military Intervention: Citigroup’s Imperial History in Haiti

Citigroup Inc.’s online timeline commemorating
its 200th anniversary says little about the Republic of Haiti — and no
wonder. While the anniversary campaign for the global financial services
giant presents a story of achievement, progress,
and world-uniting vision, Citigroup’s first encounter with Haiti is
remembered as both among the most spectacular episodes of U.S. dollar
diplomacy in the Caribbean and as an egregious example of Washington
working at the behest of Wall Street. It is also marked by military
intervention, violations of national sovereignty, and the deaths of
thousands.

In the early 20th century, the National City Bank of New York, as
Citigroup was then called, embarked on an ambitious and pioneering era
of overseas expansion. Haiti emerged as one of National City’s first international projects. In 1909, Speyer and Co. invited National City President Frank A. Vanderlip to join in the purchase of a moribund American-controlled railway concession in Haiti.

The Battle for Aden or the radicalization of Southern Arabia | New Eastern Outlook

The Battle for Aden or the radicalization of Southern Arabia | New Eastern Outlook

The Battle for Aden or the radicalization of Southern Arabia

If from the onset of the war on Yemen back in March 25, Saudi Arabia unilaterally proclaimed its desire to “liberate” the country from under the influence of the Houthis to restore, Yemen’s political legitimacy in the person of once-resigned-twice-runaway President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi, Al Saud Royals most certainly failed to mention that their real agenda lied in opening up Yemen to a radical takeover.

For those who continue to be under the illusion that this war in Yemen aims to curtail the so-called Shia crescent and thus moderate Iran rising influence in the Middle East and most particularly the Arabian Peninsula, make no mistake, war capitalists only seek one thing – plant terror seed and watch it generate millions of dollars.

For neo-imperialists the world over, there is more money to be made in chaos than in peace. And since instability and extremism have so far played in perfect harmony with America’s war-mongering, acting a tidy self-fulfilling prophecy of horrors and bloodshed, while justifying military interventionism, why stop the train at Iraq and Syria?

Puppets in the hands of imperial America, Al Saud have too, fallen victim of their own political paranoia, prisoners of the evil upon which they weaved the seat of their powerhouse and regal legitimacy – Wahhabism.

The ideological fountainhead of what western powers call “Islamic radicalism”, Wahhabism has become a growing infestation within the kingdom, one calling and longing for a grand sectarian crusade against its self-designated enemy: Shia Islam.

And because Yemen had the gall to reject Riyadh diktat, preferring instead to join the nascent non-aligned pan-Arab resistance movement, the impoverished nation has found itself in the midst of a furious storm. Yemen conflict is of course multi-layered and multi-dimensional. Yemen’s geography and its natural resources for example have long been the source of much envy and it would be missing a piece of the puzzle to refuse to acknowledge their role within this equation of war.

Beyond the desire to control Yemen’s inner riches and transform its territory into yet another base in this grand globalization game, let’s not underplay the role of the black plague – ISIS, in furthering this covert agenda.

(NaturalNews) Never in a million years would people think Bill Nye "the Science Guy" -- who once questioned genetically modified foods and urged against them -- would declare his love for altering genes. Yet after a meeting with the agricultural biotech giant, he announced that he was going to update the chapter about GMOs in his book, Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation.

"I went to Monsanto and I spent a lot of time with the scientists there and I have revised my outlook and I'm very excited about telling the world," says Nye.

Then there was the discovery of a Monsanto ad in O, Oprah's magazine. Shockingly, nestled among the pages about how to live your best life and surround yourself with happiness, sat an ad for Monsanto depicting a smiling family serving a salad in the kitchen.

'Black Friday': Carnage in Rafah during 2014 Israel/Gaza conflict

CARNAGE IN RAFAH DURING 2014 ISRAEL/GAZA CONFLICT

executive summary

On 8 July 2014, Israel launched a military operation codenamed Operation Protective Edge, the third major offensive in Gaza since 2008. It announced that the operation was aimed at stopping rocket attacks from Gaza on Israeli civilians. A ground operation followed, launched on the night of 17-18 July. According to the Israeli army, one of the primary objectives of the ground operation was to destroy the tunnel system constructed by Palestinian armed groups, particularly those with shafts discovered near residential areas located in Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip.

On 1 August 2014 Israel and Hamas agreed to a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire that would take effect at 8am that day. Three weeks after Israel launched its military offensive on Gaza, thousands of Palestinians who had sought refuge in shelters or with relatives prepared to return to their homes during the anticipated break in hostilities.

In Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip, a group of Israeli soldiers patrolling an agricultural area west of the border encountered a group of Hamas fighters posted there. A fire fight ensued, resulting in the death of two Israeli soldiers and one Palestinian fighter. The Hamas fighters captured an Israeli officer, Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, and took him into a tunnel. What followed became one of the deadliest episodes of the war; an intensive use of firepower by Israel, which lasted four days and killed scores of civilians (reports range from at least 135 to over 200), injured many more and destroyed or damaged hundreds of homes and other civilian structures, mostly on 1 August.

The Battle against GMOs in the Philippines: Confronting the WTO’s Attempts to Destabilize Sustainable Agriculture | Asia-Pacific Research

The Battle against GMOs in the Philippines: Confronting the WTO’s Attempts to Destabilize Sustainable Agriculture

The Philippines has become a GMO battlefield, with the small farmers and organic farming advocates on one hand and the Philippine government with pro-GMO scientists on the other hand. The Philippine government is showing its cooptation to the neoliberal agenda of transnational biotechnology corporations and the World Trade Organization which protects TNCs’ interests in its approval of the importation of 60 genetically modified plants and plant products for direct use as food and feed or for processing, an additional eight GM plant varieties for propagation, and 21 modified plant varieties for field testing in Philippine soil.

Alarmingly, despite concerns about BT corn’s impact on the environment, it now has 750,000 hectares of Philippine land devoted to it. According to Greenpeace Southeast Asia spokesman Daniel Ocampo, no GMO application has ever been rejected, which is very shocking and alarming given the controversy over their use. This makes the Philippines the country in Southeast Asia having the most number of genetically modified (GMO) crops approved by the government for human consumption, animal feed, propagation, and field trial, according to Greenpeace (InterAksyon.com, 2012).

Most of the approved GMOs are genetically altered corn, soybean, potato, sugar beet, canola, and alfalfa. The purpose of the genetic alteration is for these crops to resist pests and herbicide, delay ripening, and enhance their nutritional value. The one that gained the most attention and the greatest resistance was the field testing of golden rice, genetically modified rice artificially inserted with genes from a bacteria and corn to produce beta carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A. In August 2013, around 400 farmers stormed the field testing area of golden rice in Pili, Camarines Sur and uprooted the genetically modified golden rice. The farmers, members of the anti-GMO alliance SIKWAL-GMO, “contended that far from benefitting farmers, Golden Rice will contaminate native rice crops and pose risks to public health and the environment” (Ranada, 2013).

Su-25 aircraft

This article was first published by GR on September 9, 2014. In the context of the July 29, 2015 United Nations Security Council Resolution vetoed by Russia, it should be emphasized that the evidence confirms that MH17 was not brought down by a surface to air missile.

The West accuses Russia and the Donbass separatists of having brought down the plane with a Buk missile. IT’S A LIE.

The evidence available in September 2014 –including a BBC report which the BBC decided to suppress– refutes the official story. The alleged role of Russia in bringing down the plane was used as a justification to implement the economic sanctions regime against Moscow.

The hidden weed killer in your BREAD: Commercial wheat doused with
cancer-causing glyphosate herbicide right before harvest... and you're
eating it!

(NaturalNews) Now that the World Health Organization has publicly
condemned glyphosate herbicide as "probably carcinogenic to humans,"
awareness of this insidious chemical's contamination of the human food
supply is suddenly exploding among health-conscious consumers.

Most people, however, have no awareness at all that commercial wheat products are saturated with glyphosate before harvest.
They think glyphosate is only used on genetically modified crops like
corn and soybeans. But it turns out that glyphosate is routinely used as a wheat crop drying chemical
to speed up harvesting. (Monitor breaking news headlines on glyphosate in real time at Glyphosate.news, part of the new FETCH.news network.)

The
very chemical that was designed to kill weeds, in other words, is so
toxic to plant life that commercial farmers are using it to accelerate
the death of wheat crops, thereby reducing the delay between cutting the
crop and delivering it to market.

The upshot is that the commercial wheat products you're buying in the store are saturated with deadly, cancer-causing glyphosate weed killer. This includes:

• Commercial loaves of bread sold at the grocery store

• Donuts, cakes and pastries

• Pasta products (spaghetti, noodles, etc., that are made with wheat)

• Hamburger and hotdog buns

• Wheat-based breakfast cereals such as wheat flakes

• Biscuits, scones and flat bread

MH 17: The unanswered questions

Western media sources were quick to
point the finger at "Russian-backed rebels" operating in Eastern
Ukraine, operating a "Russian missile system" to down the Malaysian Airlines
flight MH 17 in July 2014. Even the name of Russia's President was
invoked...all without a shred of evidence one year on. Here are some
questions to be answered.

1. To make an accusation, you need proof.
Without the proof, the accusation amounts to slander or libel. The
official enquiry has not yet delivered any hard evidence pointing
towards Russia's involvement in the incident, either passively or
actively. Therefore are accusations to the contrary, without evidence to
back them up, simply examples of slander and libel levelled by those
who have lied time and time and time and time and time again?

2. OCSE monitor Michael Bociurkiw in an
interview shortly after the incident on July 17 that there are two or
three pieces of fuselage which show indications of heavy machine-gun
fire and no evidence of missile damage. How to explain this?

(ANTIMEDIA)
Throughout human history, governments have been interested in
“mastering the human domain”—in fully understanding how to control the
minds of their populations. In 2015, DARPA’s Narrative Networks” ( or N2) program is in full swing.

The project is intended to analyze how “narratives” play into human
psychology, delving into the way these constructs affect the mind. A
narrative is a way of phrasing something, a choice of words, for
example, that is likely a biased strategy to frame information.

“Narratives exert a powerful influence on human thoughts, emotions
and behavior and can be particularly important in security contexts,”
DARPA researchers said in a paper published in the Journal of Neuroscience Methods.

They discussed “…conflict resolution and counterterrorism
scenarios [and] detecting the neural response underlying empathy induced
by stories is of critical importance.”

Mastery of “narratives” could potentially be used to manipulate the
perception of a population using platforms of communication like
television to subtly and potently make a person think a certain way.
Many people know this tactic by a more familiar term: propaganda.

“Governments often use stories to present information, so understanding how we comprehend them is important,” said co-author Eric Schumacher, an associate professor of psychology at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Secret Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) Treaty: State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Issues for Ministerial Guidance

Today, 29 July 2015, WikiLeaks releases a secret letter from the
Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP or TPPA) Ministerial Meeting in
December 2013, along with a comprehensive expert analysis of the
document.

The letter indicates a wide-ranging privatisation and
globalisation strategy within the Agreement which aims to severely
restrict "state-owned enterprises" (SOEs). Even an SOE that exists to
fulfil a public function neglected by the market or which is a natural
monopoly would nevertheless be forced to act "on the basis of commercial
considerations" and would be prohibited from discriminating in favour
of local businesses in purchases and sales. Foreign companies would be
given standing to sue SOEs in domestic courts for perceived departures
from the strictures of the TPP, and countries could even be sued by
other TPP countries, or by private companies from those countries.
Developing countries such as Vietnam, which employs a large number of
SOEs as part of its economic infrastructure, would be affected most.
SOEs continue to fulfil vital public functions in even the most
privatised countries, such as Canada and Australia.

The TPP is the world's largest economic trade
agreement and will, if it comes into force, encompass more than 40 per
cent of the world's GDP. Despite its wide-ranging effects on the global
population, the TPP is currently being negotiated in total secrecy by 12
countries. Few people, even within the negotiating countries'
governments, have access to the full text of the draft agreement, and
the public – who it will affect most – none at all. Large corporations,
however, are able to see portions of the text, generating a powerful
lobby to effect changes on behalf of these groups and bringing
developing countries reduced force, while the public at large gets no
say.

The TPP is part of the TPP-TISA-TTIP mega-treaty
package, which together proposes to encompass more than two-thirds of
global GDP.

Non-Western Financial Markets and Russia: New Opportunities

The shift in Russia’s economic policy toward the nations of the East is creating brand new opportunities in terms of access to direct investment, investment loans, and other sources of financing. This approach is entirely in keeping with the recommendations from the recent summit of the heads of states and governments of the BRICS countries (held in Ufa July 8-10), including the suggestion that multilateral cooperation be expanded by providing access to sources of funding from the countries that are part of this group.

The first investment credits from the BRICS Development Bank will be disbursed to the countries of that group as early as 2016, and one of those loans is intended to help implement a Russian-South African project to explore, mine, and process ore and metallurgical raw materials.

According to the working groups within the BRICS Business Council, the interest rates of these loans will be at least 25% lower, with payment periods that are 33-50% longer, than the credit terms offered by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other Western financial institutions. One crucial detail is that the BRICS Development Bank will be able to offer its loans in various national currencies, thus avoiding the need for settlements in dollars or euros. This is an advantage, because due to fluctuations of the dollar and the euro against most of the world’s currencies, the credits and loans granted in these “global” currencies end up at least 10% more expensive for the borrowers.

Seeking War to the End of the World

Exclusive:
Despite the disastrous Iraq War, neocons still dominate Official
Washington’s inside-outside game, government policymakers coordinating
with think-tank opinion leaders to keep world tensions high and money
flowing to military projects, a process personified by Robert Kagan
and Victoria Nuland, says Robert Parry.

By Robert Parry

If
the neoconservatives have their way again, U.S. ground troops will
reoccupy Iraq, the U.S. military will take out Syria’s secular
government (likely helping Al Qaeda and the Islamic State take over),
and the U.S. Congress will not only kill the Iran nuclear deal but
follow that with a massive increase in military spending.

Like
spraying lighter fluid on a roaring barbecue, the neocons also want a
military escalation in Ukraine to burn the ethnic Russians out of the
east, and the neocons dream of spreading the blaze to Moscow with the
goal of forcing Russian President Vladimir Putin from the Kremlin. In
other words, more and more fires of Imperial “regime change” abroad even
as the last embers of the American Republic die at home.

A 1774 Book On Ancient Athens Thomas Jefferson Recommended

Here's an excerpt from a book, published before the revolutionary
war, on the History of Greece. I'd bought the book at an auction, then
about a year later, I discovered, reading in a book, Letters and
Addresses of Jefferson, that Thomas Jefferson recommended the same book
to a student preparing to go to college. The book tells of the history
of Athens, the first Democracy-- about its leaders, their choices and
challenges. The chapter on Athenian government is a pretty amazing read.

The
book, by Oliver Goldsmith, describes the history and thoughts by the
ancient Greeks on governing in Athens. The first edition was published
in 1774, but it's been reprinted over and over again since. But first
the story of how I found the book.

About ten or fifteen
years ago when I was at the peak of my bout with bibliomania (owning
probably 10-12,000 books, on the way to 15,000-- now I'm down to about
3-5000) I picked up the two volume Goldsmith book set, The Grecian
History; From the Earliest State to the Death of Alexander The Great, at
a Brown Brothers, a local auction,
I bought it because there was a chapter on The Government of Athens.
Cool, I thought. I'll see what people thought about democracy in Greece
BEFORE the establishment of the United States. I was amazed to actually
win the bidding, buying the 230+ year old set of books for the price of a
new best-seller-- $30.

Here and No Further - Stop Digging, Keep It In The Ground

Here and No Further - Stop Digging, Keep It In The Ground

Here and No Further - Stop Digging, Keep It In The Ground

The Rhineland’s lignite mines and coal plants
in Germany are Europe’s biggest source of CO2 emissions and home to the
world’s largest coal digger – the Bagger 288. The rapid expansion of
coal mines and plants is causing health problems due to high pollution
rates and the destruction of local villages, forests and  farmland.
That’s why this summer the Rhineland will be the target of a mass act of civil disobedience in the lead-up to the Paris climate negotiations.

On the weekend of 14-16 August, grassroots groups are calling on
people from all over Germany and other parts of Europe to stand together
to stop the world’s largest coal diggers in their tracks.

The mass action is being called “Ende Gelände” — which translates literally as ‘Here and no further”. Ende Gelände will make a powerful call to keep Europe’s coal in the ground, in the face of increasingly dangerous climate change.

Is the NSA lying about its failure to prevent 9/11?

On March 20, 2000, as part of a trip to South Asia, U.S. President Bill Clinton was scheduled to land his helicopter in the desperately poor village of Joypura, Bangladesh, and speak to locals under a 150-year-old banyan tree. At the last minute, though, the visit was canceled; U.S. intelligence agencies had discovered an assassination plot. In a lengthy email, London-based members of the International Islamic Front for Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders, a terrorist group established by Osama bin Laden, urged al Qaeda supporters to “Send Clinton Back in a Coffin” by firing a shoulder-launched missile at the president’s chopper.

The same day that Clinton was supposed to visit Joypura, the phone rang at bin Laden’s operations center in Sanaa, Yemen. To counterterrorism specialists at the National Security Agency (NSA) in Fort Meade, Maryland, the Yemeni number—967-1-200-578—was at the pinnacle of their target list. They monitored the line 24/7. But at the time, the agency now claims, it had no technical way of knowing who was placing the call. The culprit, it would later be revealed, was Khalid al-Mihdhar, one of the men bin Laden had picked months earlier to lead the forthcoming 9/11 attacks. He was calling from his apartment in San Diego, California.

The NSA knew about Mihdhar’s connection to bin Laden and had earlier linked his name with the operations center. Had they known he was now reaching out to bin Laden’s switchboard from a U.S. number, on the day an al Qaeda-linked assassination plot was planned, the agency could have legally obtained an order to tap the San Diego phone line. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, in fact, approves eavesdropping on suspected terrorists and spies in the United States. By monitoring Mihdhar’s domestic calls, the agency certainly would have discovered links to the 9/11 hijackers living on the East Coast, including Mohamed Atta.

It’s likely, in other words, that 9/11 would have been stopped in its tracks.

Israeli Soldiers Shot Hundreds of Palestinian Children with Live Ammunition: The Devastating Impact of Life After an Injury

“Before I was shot I did not bother anyone or get angry with
anybody,” says Basel Kamal Safi from Deir Ammar refugee camp, near
Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

He was just 17 when an Israeli soldier shot him with live ammunition.

“Now I get angry because of the pain, especially when someone accidentally touches my injury,” he says in the short video below.

It is one of two videos published recently by Defense for Children International–Palestine (DCI-Palestine), highlighting the experiences of children shot by Israeli occupation forces with live ammunition.

Secret TPP Talks Continue at a Luxury Hotel in Hawaii as the Deal Grows More Controversial

Trade ministers are meeting behind closed-doors at the Westin Resort and Spa in Maui this week to finalize the terms of the Trans-Pacific Partnership
(TPP). This is the first formal round of talks since the U.S. passed
the controversial Fast Track trade legislation in June, which has given
U.S. negotiators a renewed sense of determination as they continue to
push TPP's corporate-driven mandate on intellectual property and digital
regulations. The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) seeks to wrap up
talks by the end of the week. According to recent reports,
the U.S. is still pushing for copyright terms of life plus 70 years,
excessive financial damages for infringements, and a host of other
provisions that will undermine the public interest.

100th Anniversary of the US Occupation of Haiti. “City Bank along with French and German bankers, destabilized Haiti” | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization

First, the private City Bank of New York bankers (now Citigroup), along
with French and German bankers, destabilized Haiti by refusing to pay
Haiti workers for work done on the foreign-financed Haiti railroad, et
al…). Then these powerfully-connected City Bank of New York bankers,
brought the US Marines to Haiti and used them, in the words of the US’s
most decorated marine, as “high class muscle man for Big Business, for
Wall Street and the bankers.” Major General Smedley D. Butler, wrote
that he“was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism…I helped make Haiti
and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect
revenues in.”

Dispatches: A Mixed US Report on Child Soldiers

Yesterday the United States State Department released a new snapshot of
how governments around the world are doing in ending their use of child
soldiers. Its 2015 list names eight governments – Burma, the Democratic
Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and
Yemen – for recruiting or using children in their armed forces, or
supporting militias or other armed groups that use child soldiers.

U.S. Congress debates bill to let Big Pharma get more dangerous, ineffective drugs approved

(NaturalNews) A piece of legislation that will endanger American consumers by giving Big Pharma a more streamlined, quicker drug approval process that will no doubt lead to dangerous medications being marketed and sold before adequate testing has just passed a major milestone.

In recent days, the House Energy Commerce Committee approved by a unanimous 51-0 vote the 21st Century Cures Act, legislation that, the committee said in a press release, "accelerates the discovery, development, and delivery of life saving and life improving therapies and transforms the quest for faster cures."

Greece and the European Union: First as Tragedy, Second as Farce, Thirdly as Vassal State

The
Greek people’s efforts to end the economic depression, recover their
sovereignty and reverse the regressive socio-economic policies, which
have drastically reduced living standards, have been thrice denied.

First, the denial came as tragedy: When
the Greek majority elected Syriza to government and their debts
increased, the economy plunged further into depression and unemployment
and poverty soared.  The Greek people voted for Syriza believing its
promises of ‘a new course’.  Immediately following their victory, Syriza reneged on their promise to restore sovereignty –
and end the subjugation of the Greek people to the economic dictates of
overseas bankers, bureaucrats and political oligarchs.  Instead Syriza
kept Greece in the oligarchical imperialist bloc, portraying the
European Union as an association of independent sovereign countries.
What began as a great victory of the Greek people turned into a tragic
strategic retreat.   From their first day in office, Syriza led the
Greek people down the blind alley of total submission to the German
empire.

The battle for Al-Aqsa: 'This is not about prayer'

Palestinians fear imminent Israeli moves to alter the Muslims' exclusive control of Al-Aqsa.

On Monday, chunks of rock still peppered the entrance to the Al-Aqsa
Mosque, Islam's third holiest site. Volunteers worked to remove shards
of glass and metal, but parts of the crimson and gold carpet were
charred by stun grenades hurled into the holy site by Israeli forces,
who also fired rubber-coated metal bullets at Muslim worshippers.

Clashes broke out
Sunday when soldiers cleared the way for Israelis, including a cabinet
minister, to visit the Al-Aqsa compound on Tisha B'Av, a Jewish holiday
marking the destruction of two Biblical temples.

This has become a reoccurring scene, with ominous implications, which
has ignited Palestinian fears of an Israeli takeover of the holy
esplanade. Jews call the esplanade the Temple Mount and consider it
their holiest site, and Muslims refer to it as the Noble Sanctuary or
al-Haram al-Sharif.

Public Interest Groups and Over a Thousand Users Call on the Copyright Office to Affirm Its Call for Sensible Copyright Policy

Under the copyright term extensions we've seen in leaked drafts of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the quarter of a billion people living in six of the negotiating countries could lose access to 20 years of the public domain.
This proposal conflicts not just with common sense, but with the
suggestions from the United States Register of Copyrights that the U.S.
policymakers should address the downsides of exceedingly long terms.
We've sounded the alarm on that issue through a campaign highlighting TPP's Copyright Trap.

Just a few days into this campaign, over a thousand members of the EFF community have signed a petition urging the U.S. Copyright Office
to affirm its call for sensible copyright term reforms, which can only
happen if countries are not restricted by ill-considered international
agreements. You can add your voice to that chorus today:

US Air Force Providing Air Transit for ISIL Leaders in Iraq

TEHRAN (FNA)- A US chopper landed in areas under the control of the ISIL terrorist group in Western Iraq and flew away to an unknown destination with several ISIL commanders on board minutes later, Iraqi intelligence sources disclosed on Monday.

An American helicopter landed in mountainous Hamrin region in Salahuddin province, an Iraqi intelligence source declared on Monday.

"A US chopper was seen in al-Riyadh region near Hamrin mountain," the Arabic-language al-Malouma news website quoted the source as saying.

The source noted that the US helicopter landed in the region to transfer several ISIL leaders to an unknown destination. "This is not the first time that a US chopper lands in Hamrin mountainous region," he said.

Meantime, several eyewitnesses also confirmed the flights of US helicopters over the ISIL-controlled areas of Havija located to the Southwest of Kirkuk in order to take the Takfiri terrorist commanders out of the region.

Witnesses say US aircraft have been flying over militant-ruled regions very frequently in the last one year, and their missions have been anything, but war and air raid.

On February 28, a group of Iraqi popular forces known as Al-Hashad Al-Shabi shot down a US Army helicopter that was carrying weapons to the ISIL in the Western parts of Al-Baghdadi region in Al-Anbar province.

To prove their claim, the Hashad Al-Shabi forces released the photos of the shot down chopper through the Internet.

Last February, Head of the Iraqi Parliament's National Security and Defense Committee Hakem al-Zameli announced that the helicopters of the US-led anti-ISIL coalition had been dropping weapons and foodstuff for the ISIL terrorists in the Southern parts of Tikrit.

He underscored that he had documents and photos showing that the US Apache helicopters airdropped foodstuff and weapons for the ISIL.

Also in late February, al-Zameli disclosed that Iraq's army had shot down two British planes as they were carrying weapons for the ISIL terrorists in Al-Anbar province.

"The Iraqi Parliament's National Security and Defense Committee has access to the photos of both planes that are British and have crashed while they were carrying weapons for the ISIL," al-Zameli said, according to a report of the Arabic-language information center of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq.
