As UN Torture Committee Probes Vatican, Sex-Abuse Survivors Urge Church to End Decades-Long Cover-up | Democracy Now!
People from 79 countries have reached out to the organization, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP),
but there is no way to know how many adults and children have been
abused by Catholic priests over the decades. By the Vatican's own
numbers, there are at least 100,000 victims in the United States alone.
"The Vatican officials continue to split hairs and try to dodge
responsibility. They claim to not have the authority to stop the sexual
violence, and we are convinced that they do," says SNAP President
Barbara Blaine, who herself is a victim. "They’re not really taking
action that would protect children."
