EU-US Trade Deal - Politics for People
EU and US trade officials are back at the negotiating table once again. Find out why we should all be
concerned about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and then take action to ask your
MEP candidates where they stand:
Currently, products which include chicken washed in chlorine are banned
from European markets on food safety grounds. Yet this ban may not last
for long, thanks to the upcoming free-trade agreement between the EU and
the US. The European Commission calls the proposed EU-US trade deal
(the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, TTIP) the “biggest
trade deal in the world” and it is a major policy priority for the
Commission. Europe’s biggest businesses and employers’ organisations
are very enthusiastic about the TTIP and the European Commission is
ready and willing to offer privileged access to business lobbyists and
to negotiate on their behalf. In fact, even before formal talks on the
deal started, EU trade negotiators were consulting with corporate
lobby groups on their key demands, and allowing them to set the agenda
for the talks. EU trade negotiators hope to wrap the deal up in two
years – and big business is urging them on all the way.
