Turmeric more Effective than Prozac at Treating Depression!
As we all know pharmaceuticals often do more harm than good to
people. It’s also clear that herbs, foods and other natural sources can
offer similar or even better benefits without any nasty side effects.
One more time, our beliefs have been proven by science. Phytotherapy
Research published a recent study that shows that not only is turmeric
effective at treating depression, but it has the power to be more
effective than some well-known anti-depressant drugs currently on the
market.
Some studies have discovered the effectiveness of turmeric (curcumin)
in treating depression. This study shows controlled clinical trial of
its kind.
The Department of Pharmacology of Government Medical College in
Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India together with the researchers compared the
effects of Prozac and turmeric, both used individually and together, in
60 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
The researchers used the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale to measure their results:
They observed that turmeric was well tolerated by all the patients.
The proportion of responders as measured was higher in the combination
group than in the Prozac and the curcumin groups. These data were
actually not statistically significant (P = 0.58). The interesting fact
is that, in HAM-D17 score at the end of six weeks was comparable in all
three groups (P = 0.77). At the end, this study shows first clinical
evidence that turmeric can be used as a safe and effective modality for
treating patients with MDD without concurrent suicidal ideation or any
other psychotic disorders.
The researchers’ conclusions that turmeric is equally effective as
Prozac, but it doesn’t involve the negative effects of Prozac, which
increases turmeric’s value considerably. Prozac causes suicidal ideation
or other psychotic disorders, awful side effects that are clearly
absent in turmeric use.
