TTIP: GMO will create an argument between the US and Europe

The differences between the US and the
EU on issues such as genetically modified crops and hormone-treated beef
could undermine the free trade agreement, said the Secretary of
Agriculture US Department of Agriculture.

The
EU and the US are hoping to seal an agreement on the transatlantic
partnership in trade and investment (TTIP) that would encompass a third
of world trade and almost half of global gross domestic product.

As reported by Reuters, the two sides have made limited progress after
11 rounds of negotiations, however, the chapter on food and agriculture
tends to become most painful one in these trade negotiations.

“These
will not be easy conversations. We know that there are serious
problems,” said Vilzak a conference on prospects of agriculture in the
EU, hosted by the European Commission.

He singled out three issues to be addressed: European opposition to the
US exports of hormone-treated beef,  the export of genetically modified
organisms and the US opposition to the EU system of geographical origin
or the protection of designation of origin.”
