"Advocacy for a democratic solution in Catalonia"
On 21 February the world celebrated the International Mother Language
Day, established by UNESCO in 1999 to promote linguistic diversity and
multilingualism. That same day, Le Figaro published an article signed by
Charles Jaigu, attacking the multilingual model of Catalonia and
distorting its cultural and political reality. This article, riddled
with inaccuracies and untruths, persists against bilingualism specific
to the educational system and to Catalan society. Moreover, he
denigrates the movement demanding a solution through the ballot box for
the question of independence, describing it as obtuse, sectarian or
fanatic. These attacks and inaccuracies are the result of a clear
ignorance of the linguistic, cultural and political reality in Catalonia
that I wish to overcome.
The Catalans are a plural and open people, strongly pro-European,
republican and progressive. There is no withdrawal in Catalonia, no
xenophobic populism, anti-immigration or anti-European. Participation in
European elections is historically higher in Catalonia than in the rest
of Spain, and civil society is extremely active and organized. Dynamic
and multicultural, Catalonia attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists
each year, as well as many foreign investors and major international
congresses such as the Mobile World Congress. It is full of startups,
art creators, theater, dance and music festivals like Sonar.
