In Brazil, sugar production has doubled between 2000 and 2010, driven by the rise in the price of this product and the domestic demand for ethanol. At the same time, the number of conflicts over land has increased in recent years. In 2012, 36 people were killed because of this type of conflict, which is an increase of 24% compared with the previous year. In 2012, 37% of registered conflicts occurred in regions where sugarcane cultivated.
