The wave of elections witnessed so far this year in the Middle East and North Africa has unfortunately failed to indicate any progress towards democracy, instead demonstrating reinvigorated autocracies, writes Hassan Mneimneh.
This subversion of elections by authoritarian governments is forcing the trans-Atlantic alliance to change course in its policy toward the support of democracy in the region, shifting away from a focus on the electoral process to concentrating more on citizen and civil society empowerment.
