Approval for trade deal with Canada no done deal for European Parliament | Internet Policy Review
A good write-up of Tuesday's plenary debate on CETA. I like this
paragraph in particular. If there are enough S&D members opposed to
the deal and if the new Commission refuses to rewrite the deal and
remove ISDS - which I think is likely despite Juncker's anti-ISDS
rhetoric - it looks like Parliament's approval of CETA is not
guaranteed. With 184 seats, the S&D group is the second biggest
group in the Parliament after the EPP so let's keep the pressure on the
S&D MEPs.
'CETA was “unacceptable” as long as ISDS was in,
several S&D members underlined during the debate yesterday. “The
majority to pass CETA is shaky, if the S&D votes against it,” warned
Austrian S&D member Jörg Leichtfried. Many parliamentarians are
especially angry about the fact that the Commission, by polishing the
CETA deal with the inclusion of ISDS, did not honour the comments sent
by over 150.000 European organisations and individual citizens.'
