Land and resource rights are key to Sami people’s self-determination, UN rights expert says
Did
you know that the Sami are an indigenous people, inhabiting parts of
far northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia? Today, there is an
increased push for mineral extraction
and a large-scale renewable energy project on the Sami's traditional
land. For UN rights expert Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, special attention must
be paid to ensure that their traditional livelihoods - such as reindeer
hunting and salmon fishing - are safeguarded. Securing rights over
their land and natural resources is fundamental to their
self-determination and a prerequisite for them to be able to continue to
exist as a distinct people http://sm.ohchr.org/1En2HD1
