Utah Is on Track to End Homelessness by 2015 With This One Simple Idea
Prisons
waste billions of dollars ruining millions of people's lives,
exacerbating and masking the root causes of crime. Prisons do nothing to
reduce poverty, mental illness, inequality, or the cultural value
disorders which most crime and violence stem from.
A more
elegant and effective solution would be to invest all those billions of
dollars we waste on prisons and the drug war into making the
essentials of security - housing, food, and healthcare - available to
everyone unconditionally. This may sound like a radical idea, but it
would cost less than what we throw at the problem now. And our current
approach doesn't even try to solve for root causes.
You know what Daniel Quinn likes to say... when something doesn't work, let's not do it MORE next year. Let's try something ELSE.
Utah is on track to end homelessness by 2015 by following this
approach, diverting the funds it normally puts into the problem straight
into free housing, because they found that actually costs them LESS
than all the convoluted 'band-aid' fixes they tried before. See this: http://bit.ly/OOhxKt
