Rohingya should have citizenship, say Aung San Suu Kyi party in change of heart
The Burmese pro-democracy party led by Aung San Suu Kyi has said that the country’s persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority should be granted citizenship, in an apparent about-face after years of international pressure.
A spokesman for the National League for Democracy (NLD), U Nyan Win, has told the international media that Rohingya who have resided in Burma for “one or two generations … should have the right to be citizens”. However, he added that he was unaware of Ms Suu Kyi’s personal opinion on the subject of Rohingya citizenship.
