Russia: Winter games Olympic torch throws light on human rights violations | Amnesty International

As the Olympic torch arrives in Moscow ahead of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Amnesty International is launching a worldwide campaign to highlight Russia’s increasingly deplorable human rights record.

“The Olympic flame can throw light on the human rights violations that the authorities would prefer to hide behind the celebratory decorations. It is important that all those with a stake in the Games are aware of restrictions placed by the Russian authorities on civil society and ordinary citizens, and use their influence to oppose them,” said John Dalhuisen, Europe and Central Asia Programme Director.

With the arrival of the Olympic flame in Moscow and the start of its journey to Sochi on 7 October, hundreds of thousands of Amnesty International members will stage a series of events and protests worldwide.

Supporters from Ottawa through to Puerto Rico, Warsaw, Paris, Brussels and Moscow are organizing vigils, flash mobs and pickets in public places and in front of Russian embassies to raise awareness about the range of violations to the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly in Russia.

“The Olympic fanfare and spectacular ceremonies will not hide the fact that fundamental human rights are trampled over despite being explicitly guaranteed by the Russian Constitution and international human rights treaties to which Russia is party,” said John Dalhuisen.

Turkey accused of gross human rights violations in Gezi Park protests | Amnesty International

Turkey accused of gross human rights violations in Gezi Park protests | Amnesty International:

Turkish authorities committed human rights violations on a massive scale in the government’s attempts to crush the Gezi Park protests this summer said Amnesty International.

In a report published today the organization details the worst excesses of police violence, during the protests, the failure to bring these abuses to justice and the subsequent prosecution and harassment of those that took part.

“The attempt to smash the Gezi Park protest movement involved a string of human rights violations on a huge scale. They include the wholesale denial of the right to peaceful assembly and violations of the rights to life, liberty and the freedom from torture and ill-treatment,” said Andrew Gardner, Amnesty International’s expert on Turkey.

A “democratization package” announced by the Prime Minister on Monday fails to address these violations or to take any serious steps to ensure that they will not occur in the future.

After years of neoliberal reform, authoritarian rule and increasing misery, further austerity measures drive the people of Sudan back into the street.

As protests rock Sudan and the violent state crackdown mirrors the governments' reactions to popular indignation we have already seen across the Arab world, the question arises whether this is the moment Africa rises up and if the Sudanese people will lead the way in a new wave of liberation movements across the continent.

Live Chat: The Latest Mars Rover Finds | Science/AAAS | News:

The Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity, has made some exciting discoveries since it arrived on the surface of the Red Planet in August last year. In the first 100 martian days after landing, Curiosity investigated a loose rock, named Jake_M, sitting on the plains of Gale crater, and an accumulation of windblown sand, silt, and dust known as Rocknest. Jake_M is unlike any other martian rock we knew about and is similar to uncommon terrestrial rocks found on ocean islands and in rift zones. Its composition provides clues to the nature of the martian mantle. Rocknest contains water bound to amorphous materials and several simple organic compounds. Chemical analysis of this deposit indicates that basaltic martian soils may be locally sourced yet globally similar in composition. Five articles presented in the 27 September edition of Science describe the results from these initial investigations.

Israel set up a new settlement south of the West Bank illegal

sraeli authorities plan to build new illegal settlements in the Palestinian city of Hebron in the southern West Bank, according to reports from the Israeli NGO Peace Now peace (Peace Now).

According to the U.S. sustainable means "to give people welfare without harming the ecological systems on which we depend." Obamacare's Websites Are Still Broken | Motherboard

Obamacare's Websites Are Still Broken | Motherboard:

Now one day deep into the launch-of-Obamacare-government-shutdown debacle, signing up for a health plan under the Affordable Care Act is no less challenging than it was yesterday.

While plenty of people have been able to get through to their state's site via healthcare.gov's portal, and some have been able to setup up accounts to begin the e-shopping process (myself included), many have hit a wall of internal server errors.

A friend of mine in Seattle, Joshua Powell, who is unemployed and sick in bed, told me he has already spent 10 hours trying to make it through the process. I saw his status in my Facebook newsfeed last night containing a thorough testimonial of his affair with Washington State's health plan finder website, where he's made little headway beyond retrieving his login and trying to place things in an online shopping cart. When I asked him to elaborate on his experience, he wrote:

NSA chief admits govt collected cellphone location data — RT USA:

The director of the National Security Agency admitted this week that the NSA tested a program that collected cellphone location data from American citizens starting in 2010, but suspended it shortly after.

Gen. Keith Alexander, the head of both the NSA and the United States Cyber Command, told lawmakers in Washington early Wednesday that the secretive pilot program was taken offline in 2011, but that the intelligence community may someday in the future make plans to routinely collect location data about US citizens.

Alexander briefly discussed the program during a Senate hearing on the Hill early Wednesday that focused on the data provided to the government through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, including programs that were exposed earlier this year by unauthorized disclosures attributed to contractor-turned-leaker Edward Snowden.

Only days earlier, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) asked Alexander during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing if the NSA was collecting location data on American citizens.

Vaccines in shock failure: Whooping cough vaccine stops working very quickly, warn scientists:

NaturalNews) Health experts are warning that new vaccines for whooping cough are needed quickly and that additional booster shots for children are likely to be required as well for the disease after a new study found that the effectiveness of the current vaccine fades sharply over a period of time.

Results of the study, published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, explains, in part anyway, a resurgence of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, which has infected in excess of 26,000 people this year, marking the largest outbreak in more than five decades, reports said.

The current vaccine, which was introduced in the 1990s, fails to protect people as long as once believed. In fact, the study's authors note, the vaccine loses nearly half its effectiveness with each passing year.

But was it ever really "effective" in the first place? Mounting evidence suggests that pertussis vaccines have never really worked.

Edward Snowden's E-Mail Provider Defied FBI Demands to Turn Over Crypto Keys, Documents Show | Threat Level | Wired.com:

The U.S. government obtained a secret court order demanding that Edward Snowden’s e-mail provider, Lavabit, turn over its private SSL key, which would have allowed the FBI to wiretap the service’s users.

The July 16 order came after Texas-based Lavabit refused to circumvent its own security systems to comply with earlier orders intended to trace the Internet IP address of a particular Lavabit user.

The filings show that Lavabit was served on June 28 with a so-called “pen register” order requiring it to record, and provide the government with, the connection information on one of its users every time that user logged in to check his e-mail. The name of the target is redacted from the unsealed records, but the offenses under investigation are listed as violations of the Espionage Act, leaving little doubt that NSA Edward Snowden was the target.

However, while Syria has joined the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons , we are taking a look at Israeli activities.

The UN inspectors who monitor chemical weapons in Syria would have much to do if they were sent to monitor the nuclear, biological and chemical weapons (NBC) of Israel.

But according to the rules of “international law”, they cannot do so. Israel has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, nor the Convention Banning Biological Weapons , and has signed but not ratified the Convention Banning Chemical Weapons.

Cold War Redux: Washington Turbo-Militarizes China’s Backyard | Global Research:

While the Middle East teeters on the brink of another prolonged conflict that would engender some form of US involvement, the Obama’s administration’s shift away from the region and toward East Asia is easier said than done. Though the “Pivot to Asia” policy of the Obama administration may not be stealing all the headlines, US military presence around the South China Sea and the Straits of Malacca is quietly building up, giving rise to increased American muscle in Southeast Asia. Obama announced the pivot policy during a visit to Australia in 2011, declaring a fully equipped 2,500-strong Marine task force operating from Darwin by 2016. The pivot to Asia is anything but an empty catchphrase, as the US Air Force is beginning to bolster its presence in bases in Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, with plans to move 60 percent of US warships to the region by 2020. It’s no secret that these developments are the Pentagon’s response to China’s ever-increasing military and economic clout, and Uncle Sam is boldly sending the message that he’s coming to town.

Worldwide protests demand stop to Brazil's assault on indigenous rights - Survival International

Supporters of human rights organization Survival International held a vocal protest outside the Brazilian embassy in London today in support of thousands of indigenous demonstrators in Brazil rallying against the onslaught of their hard-won land rights.

Nixiwaka Yawanawá, an Amazon Indian from Brazil, led the London protest wearing his tribe’s headdress and facial decorations. He was joined by dozens of supporters wearing tribal face paint and carrying placards.

Nixiwaka said, ’We’re here to support our indigenous brothers and sisters in Brazil who are facing the worst assault on their rights in decades. We, Brazil’s indigenous peoples, have lived on our lands for as long as we can remember, and we cannot live without them. These new laws would mean the end of our rights to our lands and must not be passed!’

Protests are being held across Brazil and the world this week against attempts by the Brazilian government to water down indigenous peoples’ constitutional rights in the name of the country’s push for industrialization and ‘development’.

Protecting rights of migrant workers more crucial than ever – UN Committee -- DisplayNews

DisplayNews

GENEVA (2 October 2013) – Migrants are too often regarded as commodities or economic and political problems instead of human beings, a UN Committee has said in an appeal to all countries to join an international treaty that protects the rights of migrant workers.
“The International Convention on the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families (ICRMW) is one of the core international human rights treaties,” said Chairperson Abdelhamid El Jamri on behalf of the Committee on the Rights of Migrant Workers (CMW).
“Ratifying this treaty does not commit States to giving migrant workers special treatment. It does not create new rights nor establish additional rights specifically for migrant workers. What it does do is give specific form to standards that protect all human beings so that they are meaningful within the context of migration,” said Mr. El Jamri.
Changing patterns of migration and the exploitation and discrimination faced by migrant workers in sectors such as construction and agriculture have made protecting their rights more crucial than ever, he stressed.
The Convention, in force for 10 years, has been ratified by 47 States. However, no major destination countries, among them the US, EU member States and Gulf countries, have ratified it, even though it reflects the rights set out in other core human rights treaties to which many States are already party.
The Committee’s call for wider ratification of the Convention comes ahead of high-level talks at the United Nations in New York on 3 and 4 October on migration and development, which are seen as an important opportunity to promote recognition of the fundamental human rights of all migrants.
More than 200 million people worldwide are international migrants; of these some 30 million are estimated to be irregular migrants.

Save the Nobel Peace Prize from Itself | Global Research

Save the Nobel Peace Prize from Itself | Global Research:

On October 11, we’ll learn whether the Norwegian Nobel Committee is interested in reviving the Nobel Peace Prize or putting another nail in its coffin.

Alfred Nobel’s vision for the Nobel Peace Prize created in his will was a good one and, one might have thought, a legally binding one as well.

The peace prize is not supposed to be awarded to proponents of war, such as Barack Obama or the European Union.

It is not supposed to be awarded to good humanitarians whose work has little or nothing to do with peace, such as most other recent recipients. As with the Carnegie Endowment for Peace which works for almost anything but, in violation of its creator’s will, and as with many a “peace and justice” group focused on all sorts of good causes that aren’t the elimination of militarism, the Nobel has become a “peace” prize, rather than a peace prize.

Noam Chomsky Exclusive: A Conversation on the Waning of American Power

Noam Chomsky Exclusive: A Conversation on the Waning of American Power:

Noam Chomsky's voice is a soft lament as he talks of the land of his birth, a land at odds with itself. "American imperial influence has diminished," he tells me, "but we should remember that American power has been on the wane since 1945. The peak of US power was immediately after the Second World War and it has been declining steadily since then."

It's a statement borne out by the current stand-off in Syria, which, I suggest, is the foreign soil upon which the US and Russia are fighting each other. "There's a sense that they are, but I don't think it's real," is Chomsky's refined judgment. "Certainly, the US and Russia have different interests, so there's a conflict."

But there is also the sense the US continues to influence international events to obtain some semblance of its once vaulted status, with foreign policy failures evidence of diminishing global power, and as Chomsky colours his words with a logician's certitude, he leaves little room for argument.

But one would argue with him, if he let you. He lays it on the line. "Since the late 1940s, power has been diversified. In 1949, China became independent, which was a serious blow to the US imperial system based on the idea of controlling Asia via the control of China. Since then, Latin America has also escaped US control.

SPAIN AGAINST THE CATALONIA NATION -- Preparant un altre cop d'estat - Editorial - VilaWeb

Preparant un altre cop d'estat - Editorial - VilaWeb

Preparing another coup

The atmosphere was heating up by the minute. And yesterday a senior socialist leader, those of the GAL when they were armed, joined the complaint had been leading members of the PP and UPyD: if the Catalans to insist that the consultation would Spanish government dissolved or suppressed Catalan autonomy. The man also did not step was to make a comparison with which, as such, could understand equating ETA and the PSC, which is already said.

Interestingly, we now have circulated this thing suppress autonomy, but are unable to explain how to do this. At most, Rosa Díez and Vidal Quadras agreed to invoke Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution and BELLOCH I assume that is the gentleman who talked, thought also, because he referred to the Senate.

But what does this famous article 155? He says he can override the autonomy? Well, no. The whole copie: 'If an autonomous community does not fulfill the obligations that the Constitution and other laws that impose or acts in a way that is seriously prejudicial to the general interests of Spain, the Government, after the request to the Chairman of the Independent Community and, if not attend with the approval of the Senate majority, may adopt the necessary measures to compel the compliance of such obligations or forced to protect the public interest mentioned . '

And in the second paragraph says: 'For the implementation of the measures provided for in the preceding paragraph, the Government may issue instructions to all the authorities of the autonomous communities.'

Where you read this uninstalling, you? I nowhere. I do not see the text instead tell the state can eliminate another part of the state - which, whether we like it or not, autonomous current state are also -. Even is interesting to observe that the second part says that the government understood that Spanish can give instructions to 'all the authorities of the autonomous communities'. Hey! If you can give instructions to the authorities must be because the authorities have not disappeared, I guess ...

So how is it that with so much joy as each other and agree to threaten us to dissolve the Government? Because at the end of the law in Spain, the letter of the law, even a temporary accident. Unfortunately. They have decided that they will disband, or at least try it, stretching like a chewing gum an article in the constitution that says you can not do. Just ensure that we expel the European Union without being able to tell us what article of which treaty based.

They really strong these people. The problem is that Europe is the resistance of the legislation and lawmakers know that law is something that has to be treated carefully. It is clear that the constitutional because Spain will say that article obviously meant what they say it says, but do not tell. The coup as they do with the sentence of the statute. Now it's all repeat it ...

Two notes aside, if you're interested in the subject read this article detailing Peter Cardús Spain has legal avenues to end the independence process. And although no debate Interesse you may want to know that the end of Yugoslavia came through a similar gesture. When Serbia was decided that the rules of the federal presidency no longer made sense and try to impose on others their, without any irrefutable legal argument in favor.

Spain: The State must assume a leadership role and engage more actively to respond to the demands of the relatives of the disappeared -- DisplayNews

DisplayNews

Madrid (September 30, 2013) – “The State must assume a leadership role and engage more actively to respond to the demands of thousands of families searching for the fate or whereabouts of their loved ones who disappeared during the Civil War and the dictatorship”, said the experts of the Working Group of the United Nations on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances* at the end of their visit to Spain.
“Since the return of democracy, Spain has taken limited steps to ensure truth, justice, reparation and memory for the cases of enforced disappearances committed during the Civil War and the dictatorship,” the experts noted. “These progresses have been achieved through initiatives, many of which have been led or carried out mainly or exclusively by the relatives of the victims, or by civil society and some State institutions, mainly in certain Autonomous Communities. The State should assume its responsibility to ensure that these initiatives are part of a comprehensive, consistent and permanent State policy”.
“In all places visited during this week, the Working Group has met with hundreds of relatives. Virtually everybody has expressed deep frustration towards the administrative obstacles and difficulties they face in accessing the information needed to clarify the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones. Given the passing of time and the old age of many of the witnesses and relatives it is urgent that the State respond to their claim as an immediate priority”, the experts added.
“It is regrettable the situation of impunity for cases of enforced disappearances that occurred during the Civil War and the dictatorship. There is no ongoing effective criminal investigation nor any person convicted” they added. In this regard, the experts noted that procedural rights to an investigation, to truth and to justice are central to victims’ perceptions of reparation.
Other important challenges in Spain are the limited scope of the Law of Historical Memory and the lack of budget for its implementation, the fact that the Amnesty Law remains in force, the absence of an autonomous crime of enforced disappearance, the lack of a law on access to information, the difficulties in accessing archives and the lack of a national plan for the search of disappeared persons, among others,” they said.
Ms. Jasminka Dzumhur and Mr. Ariel Dulitzky, two of the five members of the group, visited Spain from 23 to 30 September. During their visit, the Working Group visited Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country and Andalusia. The experts met with several authorities, relatives and different civil society actors.
The Working Group would like to thank the Government of Spain for having extended an invitation to visit the country, for its broad and positive cooperation before and during the visit as well as for the openness to dialogue. It also welcomes the information provided during the visit. The Working Group would also like to extend its gratitude to the authorities of the three Autonomous Communities it visited.
The analysis of the information received during and before the visit will be considered in preparing the report to be submitted to the Human Rights Council in 2014.

UN report urges end to torture in Libya through transfer of detainees to effective State control --- DisplayNews

DisplayNews

GENEVA (1 October 2013) – The United Nations on Tuesday issued a report about the torture and ill-treatment of detainees in Libya, recommending swift action to transfer detainees held by armed brigades to effective State control and renewed efforts to build the capacity of the criminal justice system.
The report is issued jointly by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in implementation of UNSMIL’s mandate of assisting Libyans in promoting human rights. This includes supporting Libyan efforts against arbitrary detention and torture, by monitoring abuses in detention centres, advocating for remedial action, advising on judicial reform and building the capacity of Libya’s corrections system. The report is based on information gathered first-hand during UNSMIL’s visits to nearly 30 detention centres over two years, including information from detainees, family members, officials and civil society, as well as documentation such as medical reports.

The report states that the violations continued despite the Government’s efforts. It adds that prolonged detention and interrogation at the hands of armed brigades without experience or training in the handling of detainees or conducting criminal investigations, as well as the lack of effective judicial oversight, create an environment conducive to torture or other ill-treatment. On the other hand, when detention facilities have been handed over to trained officers of the Judicial Police, there have been marked improvements in the condition and treatment of detainees.
The report indicates that torture is widespread and most frequent immediately after arrest and during the first days of interrogation to extract confessions and other information. Detainees are usually held without access to lawyers and with only occasional, if any, access to families. The vast majority of the estimated 8,000 conflict-related detainees are also being held without due process.

The report records 27 cases of death in custody, where significant information suggests that torture was the cause of death, since late 2011. The UN also received information on several other such cases during this period but was not able to fully document them. Eleven (11) deaths in custody detailed in the report took place in 2013 in detention centres that are under the nominal authority of the Government but, in effect, are run by armed brigades which emerged during the 2011 revolution. In some cases, members of the armed brigades freely admitted, and even tried to justify, the physical abuse of detainees.

Shhh ... the NSA's new data center may be open already - The Denver Post:

WASHINGTON — Don't look for balloons or a big "Grand Opening" sign outside the National Security Agency's new Utah Data Center.

The facility is expected this fall to quietly begin sucking in massive amounts of information for the intelligence community and storing it in the cavernous buildings in Bluffdale, Utah, according to NSA officials — and it could be open now even as the agency faces scrutiny over efforts to collect data on Americans domestically.

NSA officials declined to say whether the center is already online, but the secret agency isn't known for celebrating the opening of classified buildings.

"We turn each machine on as it is installed, and the facility is ready for that installation to begin," NSA spokeswoman Vanee Vines said recently in an interview.

» Government ‘Shut Down’ Doesn’t Prevent Opening of $2 Billion NSA Spy Center Alex Jones' Infowars: There's a war on for your mind!:

The so-called “government shut down” and the furloughing of thousands of non-essential federal employees has not prevented the opening of a $2 billion dollar NSA spy center in Utah which will snoop on Americans’ private emails, Google searches and phone calls.

Image: NSA Spy Center, Utah.

As we highlighted yesterday, the shut down will only affect the tiny amount of services government provides that Americans actually like.

Rest assured, TSA grope downs, VIPR checkpoints, drone attacks, SWAT team raids, tax collection, torturing terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, arming jihadists in Syria and running guns to Mexican drug dealers will all continue unimpeded – as will NSA domestic spying.

Although the NSA itself refuses to confirm it, to all intents and purposes the agency’s mammoth new spy center in Bluffdale, Utah “may be open already,” according to the Denver Post.

The gap in employment rates between America's highest- and lowest-income families has stretched to its widest levels since officials began tracking the data a decade ago, according to an analysis of government data conducted for The Associated Press.

Rates of unemployment for the lowest-income families—those earning less than $20,000—have topped 21 percent, nearly matching the rate for all workers during the 1930s Great Depression.

CiU see a relationship between the process and the "punishment" of the budget

"One can understand that many people think that there is a decision beyond the budget," warns Macias

Spokesmen attachments CiU in Congress, Pedro Macias and Jose Sanchez Llibre, has hinted that this afternoon there is a link between "punishment" in Spanish Catalonia in the budget process and sovereignty. "One can understand that many people think that there is a decision beyond the budget and that has more to do with the debate in Catalonia," said Macias, who has resisted cuts global investment of 8% with 25 in Catalonia.

"Even the most ardent defenders of the unity of Spain will want to question everyone equally and not about punishing want to express a contrary opinion", clinched with some ironic deputy Olot.

Macias acknowledged that finds no explanation "rational" to the fact that Catalonia suffered a fall "stratospheric" of state investments above average when it comes to the "locomotive" of Spain, and even when it is 'has emerged from the crisis. "If we let the engine run out of fuel, we do not follow anyone," he warned.

In the same vein, Josep Sanchez Llibre said that these accounts are "typical PP" because they are "centralizing, give much room the central government and communities leads to austerity." This means that social spending is "great victim, the great punishment." Has also questioned the prospects for economic growth that draws the Spanish government, basing everything on export growth.

Hersh added that the Obama administration habitually lies but they continue to do so because the press allows them to get away with it.

Forbes magazine profiled Palantir in an August 2013 cover story in which it was revealed that the company collected around $500 million through fundraising, according to CEO Alex Karp. Now less than a month later, the SEC filing dated Sept. 27 shows that an additional wave of investigating has increased the amount raised to almost three-quarters of a billion dollars.

Anonymous has launched a new video describing the creepy new trend of biometric identification, which just went into high gear with the launch of the iPhone 5s. They've supported the claims in this video with a long pastebin of information here: tinyurl.com/c4752v9

Canada has bee in on the act for quite some time.

Late last week, Canadian Immigration added 11 countries to the already long list of countries whose citizens are required to give up biometric information on entering Canada.

For a long time, Canadian passports have required "no smile" pictures to make it easier for facial recognition technology to work. All of this is quite troubling alongside the tepid coverage of Canada's part (as one of the "five eyes") in US NSA spying.
