Unnecessary Burden

Unnecessary Burden:

Many women in Nepal live for years with uterine prolapse, a debilitating condition in which the pelvic muscles weaken, allowing the uterus to descend into the vagina. The causes are many - having a lot of children within a short space of time, giving birth without a skilled health worker, and carrying heavy loads during or too soon after pregnancy.

Underpinning the causes is widespread discrimination against women and girls in society. This discrimination often prevents them from making basic decisions about their own bodies, health and lives. So far, government efforts to end gender discrimination have been limited.

Amnesty is supporting the Nepali women’s movement who are fighting for change. Sign our petition today, calling on the government of Nepal to recognize uterine prolapse as a human rights issue, and to take urgent action to end the discrimination that violates the rights of so many women and girls and causes this painful condition.
